Rusal recently announced its fourth-quarter and full-year operating results of 2020, revealing that its aluminium production in Q4 stood at 950,000 tonnes, bringing the total full-year output to 3.755 million tonnes.  The production in Q4 saw an increase of 1.2 per cent from 939,000 tonnes in Q3, while the output in the whole year stood flat compared to 3.757 million tonnes in 2019. Rusal’s Siberian smelters represented 93 per cent of total output in Q4 2020.

In Q4, aluminium sales amounted to 1.028 million tonnes, with sales of value-added products (VAP) at 483,000 tonnes, reflecting recovery of VAP share in total sales mix to 47 per cent in Q4 from 37 per cent in Q2 2020. Aluminium sales in Q4 stood 2 per cent higher over the quarter from 1.008 million tonnes.

In the whole year, aluminium sales totalled 3.926 million tonnes, 6 per cent down from 4.176 million tonnes in 2019. This reduction in sales is attributable mostly to a higher base in 2019 when sales volumes were above normal levels due to the partial sell down of surplus inventories of primary aluminium that were accumulated over 2018 as a result of OFAC Sanctions.

Value-added product sales in the full year of 2020, however, increased by 11.3 per cent year-on-year to 1.722 million tonnes, demonstrating a 44 per cent share in total sales.

In 4Q20, the average aluminium realized price rose 10.1 per cent Q-o-Q to US$ 1,940 per tonne, driven both by the London Metal Exchange QP component and the average realized premium component.

On the other hand, the average aluminium realized price in total 12 months decreased 6 per cent Y-o-Y to US$ 1,805 per tonne, as the LME QP component declined 7.1% YoY to US$ 1,658 per tonne, partially offset by the realized premium up by 8.3 per cent to US$ 147 per tonne.

Global Aluminium Industry Outlook 2021

According to Rusal, global aluminium demand in 2020 was down by 1.7 per cent to 63.9 million tonnes, improving from 2.6 per cent decline Y-o-Y during the nine months of 2020. Production grew by 2.3 per cent to 65.3 million tonnes, taking into account of 3.9 per cent growth Y-o-Y in China to 37.2 million tonnes.
