Rusal, a leading global Russian aluminium producer, announced its operating results for the fourth quarter of 2021 and for the 12 months ending December 31, 2021, revealing bauxite production in Q4 at 3.602 million tonnes, a decrease of 5 per cent from 3.792 million tonnes in Q3 2021.
The decrease is largely attributed to seasonal weather factor that affected the operational performance of Timan, where bauxite output plunged by 39.4 per cent Q-o-Q, and North Urals, with bauxite production decreased by 11.3 per cent.
In 12 months, Rusal’s bauxite output came in at 15.031 million tonnes, up by 1.3 per cent from 14.838 million tonnes a year ago.
Rusal’s bauxite mines in Guinea produced 1.953 million tonnes altogether in Q4 2021, compared to 1.694 million tonnes in Q3 2021. Mines in Russia produced 1.221 million tonnes, however, down by 29.42 per cent Q-o-Q from 1.730 million tonnes.
Production of alumina in 4Q2021 totalled 2.138 million tonnes, an increase of 3.5 per cent from 2.064 million tonnes in Q32021. In 12 months, Rusal’s alumina output grew 1.5 per cent from 8.182 million tonnes in 2020 to 8.304 million tonnes.
At Aughinish refinery in Ireland, alumina production in Q4 grew by 10.3 per cent from 457,000 tonnes in Q3 to 504,000 tonnes. In the entire year of 2021, alumina output at the refinery totalled 1.878 million tonnes, marginally down by 0.2 per cent from 1.883 million tonnes a year ago.
Windalco refinery in Jamaica contributed 104,000 tonnes of alumina to the total production. That was 7.6 per cent less than 112,000 tonnes in 3Q2021. In 12 months, the production was down by 14.4 per cent from 523,000 tonnes in 2020 to 448,000 tonnes.
Group’s external bauxite purchase in Q4 stood at 1.386 million tonnes and that in the entire year of 2021 totalled 5.152 million tonnes. External purchase of alumina during Q4 amounted to 213,000 tonnes and in 12 months at 836,000 tonnes.
