Rio Tinto announced first quarter of 2021 production results. The company’s bauxite output was 2% lower than the first quarter of 2020 due to wet weather on the East coast of Australia impacting its Weipa operations. The port at the Amrun mine closed for 14 days due to large swells and cyclones. The output came in at 13.6 million tonnes in the first quarter.

But the bauxite production was 2% higher than the fourth quarter of 2020 following a train failure at the Andoom mine at Weipa last year. 2021 bauxite production guidance remains unchanged.
Rio Tinto shipped 9.0 million tonnes of bauxite to third parties in the first quarter. That was a drop of 5% than the same period of 2020 due to the major weather events causing shipment delays.
Rio Tinto Chief Executive Jakob Stausholm, said: “We achieved an overall solid operating performance in the first quarter. We have maintained guidance ranges in all our products, with site teams successfully managing the effects of significant rainfall, in particular at our Australian iron ore assets.
