As per a report this week, the Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) successfully concluded the 25th Cycle of the ‘Can Collection Drive (CCD)’. Hundreds of individuals of all ages gathered to deposit aluminium cans for recycling, including academic and government institutions, hospitality, business, private organisations, and families. EEG was able to collect 5,629kg of aluminium cans and send them to local industries for recycling, diverting this easily recyclable commodity from landfills.

The City of Milwaukee and Waukesha County in Wisconsin, USA, a jointly owned recycling plant secured an aluminium beverage can capture grant this week. Ardagh Metal Packaging and Crown Holdings backed the grant program. The fund will be utilised to install equipment at the facility to capture crushed or flattened cans. The recycling plant will now source more than 27 million aluminium beverage cans per year and drive annual revenue of more than $400,000.
According to the August data recently revealed by the US Geological Survey, India imported 45,300 tonnes of aluminium scrap from the US, up by 11,200 tonnes or 32.84 per cent month-on-month. On a year-on-year calculation, India’s aluminium scrap imports from the US in August 2021 stood 67.8 per cent higher than 27,000 tonnes. From January to August, the country imported 248,000 tonnes of aluminium scrap in total versus 172,000 tonnes a year ago.
Can Manufacturers Institute’s (CMI) beverage can manufacturers and aluminum can sheet producer members are targeting to achieve the United States ambitious recycling rates including a 70 per cent recycling rate by 2030. The objective is to improve the circularity of aluminum beverage can, while demonstrating its sustainability to beverage companies and consumers. In 2020, the United States aluminum beverage can recycling rate was 45 per cent. The industry aims to increase it to 70 per cent by 2030, 80 per cent by 2040, and more than 90 per cent by 2050.
