Primary Aluminium production in North America drops in June, export up significantly

The Aluminum Association, in cooperation with the Aluminium Association of Canada, reported that the annual rate of primary aluminium production in North America (U.S. and Canada) was at 3,928,033 tonnes during June 2017, which is down 0.6% from the May 2017 rate of 3,950,536 tonnes.

The individual production rate in the U.S. and Canada dropped very insignificantly.  Compared to a year ago, the North American annual rate was eight-tenths of one % below the June 2016 rate of 3,957,851 tonnes. Actual production through the first half of 2017 stood at 1,963,285 tonnes, down 3.3 % from the same period of 2017.

Aluminium imports of ingot, scrap and mill products into the U.S. and Canada (excluding cross-border trade) stood at 947 million pounds in May 2017. This records a 50.1 % growth over the May 2016 total of 631 million pounds.

Exports, including scrap stood at 545 million pounds, down 3.7 % YoY. Scraps accounted for roughly 53.6 % of reported aluminium exports in May. Excluding scrap, exports stood at 252 million pounds, down 14.0 % YoY. Through the first five months of 2017, imports were up 41.3 % to 4,366 million pounds, while exports were up 3.1 % to 2,528 million pounds.
