PPG Industries has introduced a new interior coating for aluminium pet food cans in the US, marking what it says is the first coil-applied PVC non-intent (PVC-NI) solution of its kind in the market.

The product, branded PPG NUTRISHIELD MAX PPG7590, is designed for draw-redraw (DRD) cans and easy-open ends typically used in wet pet food packaging. It comes as a single-component system, which means it doesn’t require mixing or adjustments before use, a shift from more conventional multi-component coatings.

That change is expected to simplify production at the plant level. By removing steps like formulation mixing and frequent changeovers, the coating can help reduce downtime and make workflows more predictable. It also cuts down on material waste, since there’s less handling involved.

From a packaging perspective, the coating gives a uniform white finish inside the can, which is often tied to product presentation and brand consistency. At the same time, it is built to protect the contents, helping maintain freshness and prevent contamination over shelf life.

Florence Béliard, who works on food packaging coatings at PPG, said the product brings together performance and ease of use, while also aligning with tighter regulatory expectations.

The coating has been developed without PVC, PFAS, BPA or other bisphenols, which have been under increasing scrutiny. That makes it easier for manufacturers to meet evolving compliance requirements, especially in food-related applications.

It is also designed to work within existing aluminium coil coating processes, so manufacturers don’t need to overhaul their systems to adopt it. Performance-wise, the coating shows resistance to staining from common wet pet food ingredients like chicken, fish and turkey, something that helps maintain both appearance and hygiene over time.

The product has already been cleared by several players across the supply chain, including can makers and pet food brands, and adds to PPG’s broader Nutrishield range focused on food packaging applications.
