Orbit reports steady progress in the development of SGA plant

Orbite Aluminae is making significant progress in the development of a smelter-grade alumina (SGA) plant to process aluminous clay using its proprietary process at its Grande-Vallée property in Quebec. In September, Orbite was granted a 20-year mining lease for its Grande-Vallée deposit and confirmed it is ahead of schedule on construction of the Cap-Chat high-purity alumina (HPA) plant, due to start production in Q113. Orbite continues to reinforce its green credentials, having recently developed its proprietary clean process technology to produce alumina from fly ash, a waste product from coal-fired thermal power plants, as well as red mud.

In March, Orbite signed an MoU with RUSAL to invest in a JV to realise an SGA plant by 2015. In May, the revised Preliminary Economic Assessment (PEA) confirmed favourable economics for an SGA plant producing 540ktpa of alumina and 189ktpa of pure hematite. In May, Orbite began construction of a 3tpd full-scale HPA production plant with commissioning scheduled for December and production in Q113. In September, Orbite was granted a 20-year renewable mining lease for its Grande-Vallée aluminous clay deposit, supporting the feasibility study currently underway.
