NTPC Limited, India's largest integrated power utility company, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Gujarat government to explore opportunities across conventional and non-conventional energy sectors. The agreement reinforces the shared commitment of the state and central governments to accelerate India’s clean energy transition while maintaining energy security.

MoU highlights a long-term energy vision
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was exchanged during the Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference held in Mehsana. It took place in the presence of Chief Minister Bhupendrabhai Patel, Union Minister of New & Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi and Gujarat’s Energy Minister Kanubhai Desai, along with other dignitaries.
NTPC stated that the agreement aims to explore opportunities in both conventional and non-conventional energy sectors. The company has been increasing its renewable portfolio, boasting a present installed capacity of over 83 GW and another 30.90 GW in construction, comprising a total of 13.3 GW of renewable capacity.
The power giant has committed 60 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2032, which is a key target consistent with the ambitions of India’s net zero, ambitions on which all major global industries and climate bodies are focusing to ramp up capacity, etc.
Renewable push extends to Goa
In a parallel development, NTPC Renewable Energy has launched the bidding process for a 300 MW grid-connected solar project in Goa. Bidders have until 26 August 2025 to submit proposals, backed by an earnest money deposit of INR 200 million (USD 2.25 million).
The selected contractor will handle design, engineering, manufacturing, supply, installation, testing, and commissioning of the plant, along with three years of O&M services. This includes responsibility for securing encumbrance-free land and ensuring grid connectivity.
A broader decarbonisation strategy
This solar project is part of a wider expansion plan following NTPC REL’s May 2025 tender for a 245 MW project at the Khavda Renewable Energy Park in Gujarat’s Rann of Kutch. It reflects the utility’s dual-track strategy, maintaining stable thermal generation while scaling up renewables to reduce carbon intensity.
NTPC has also diversified into battery storage, pumped hydro, waste-to-energy, and green hydrogen. This diversified approach positions it as a key enabler of India’s low-carbon energy future.
