Novelis, a global leader in sustainable aluminium solutions and the world's largest aluminium recycler, has announced the opening of the Ulsan Aluminum Recycling Centre. With this facility, Novelis anticipates reducing carbon emissions by 420,000 tonnes annually.
This reduction is equivalent to the annual CO₂ absorption of around 19 million trees, assuming an average of 22 kilograms per tree. The new facility, a joint venture between Novelis and Kobe Steel, represents a $65 million investment and boasts an annual production capacity of 100,000 tonnes of low-carbon aluminium sheet ingot.
"The Ulsan Aluminum Recycling Centre is a strategic investment aimed at meeting growing customer demand for sustainable, low-carbon aluminium across beverage packaging, automotive, and speciality product sectors. We will continue to expand the use of recycled aluminium inputs to reduce our carbon footprint as well as those of our customers and our industry, accelerating the transition to a circular economy," said Sachin Satpute, President of Novelis Asia.
Novelis operates Asia's largest aluminium beverage can recycling facility in Yeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do. With the addition of the Ulsan Recycling Centre, the company's domestic recycling capacity now totals approximately 470,000 tonnes annually.
Fully funded by Novelis, the new centre is designed to process a diverse range of aluminium scrap, including material from cans, automotive, and industrial sources, further strengthening Novelis' recycling capabilities in the region. Recycling aluminium saves 95 per cent of the energy and 95 per cent of the greenhouse gases typically emitted during the production of aluminium from bauxite. Additionally, aluminium is a fully circular material, capable of being infinitely recycled without any loss in quality.
