North America’s alumina production dampens 14.2% Y-o-Y in Feb’24 while South America witnesses 4.17% growth

If we consider the alumina production rate during February 2023, we can witness a Year-on-Year slump of 14.2 per cent or 28,000 tonnes in North America from 197,000 tonnes. But on the other hand, in South America there can be seen a Year-on-Year influx of 39,000 tonnes or 4.17 per cent from 936,000 tonnes marked in February 2023. 

Despite the eminent downtrend, Pennsylvania-based Alcoa has agreed to acquire Alumina Limited in an all-scrip transaction. The Alumina Limited Board has recommended that shareholders vote in favour of the agreement subject to an independent expert's conclusion that the transaction is in their best interests. Alcoa's CEO has stated that the acquisition will provide enhanced opportunities for value creation, strengthening Alcoa's position as one of the world's largest bauxite and alumina producers.

Quarter-on-Quarter analysis 

On that note, it should be mentioned that on a Quarter-on-Quarter basis, there has been a rise of 11.96 per cent or 64,000 tonnes in North American alumina production from 535,000 tonnes in Q3 2023 to 599,000 tonnes in Q4 2023. Again, in South America, we can find an O-o-Q surge of 1.68 per cent or 51,000 tonnes from 3.039 million tonnes in Q3 2023 to 3.09 million in Q4 2023. 

If we add the January and February alumina production rate of North America, a 61.6 per cent achievement can be calculated in respect with Q4 2023, while in South America the haul for the same period amounts to 64.4 per cent of the Q4 2023 alumina production ratio. Therefore, the month of March must have a prominent yield to even compete with last year's records.
