Last week, Nebraska Recycling Council (NRC) taught Custer County residents how to recycle more and how to recycle right. NRC Program Manager Megan Jackson and Custer County Recycling Manager Kelly Flynn were present at the program to teach some do’s and don’ts when it comes to recycling at local level.

According to them, Custer County can potentially receive $800 for a ton of aluminium can which can be recycled indefinitely. Aluminum cans are the one item they said, should never be wasted. Recycling aluminium saves more than 90% of the energy needed to smelt aluminium from the ore. They explained that tossing away an aluminium container wastes as much energy as throwing out half the volume of gasoline in the same container.
They suggested sorting materials at home first before taking them out to a recycling trailer. They urged the residents to set up a recycling station in the garage or porch with four separate containers for aluminium, tin, paper, and plastics.
They asked the residents to pick up a recycling guide at the library to understand the right way to recycle. Pre-sorting before putting in the recycling trailers makes it easy to recycle the materials. It’s also advised to throw an item in the trash, if one is not sure about its recyclability. Some items can jam machines in the recycling center or cause unsafe work environment.
Cans are supposed to be kept clean, dry, and empty.
