Nalco Undergoes Significant Management Shift

After taking charge of Nalco, Das said his job will be to prioritse projects. "We will take up a proposed Rs 16,000 crore aluminium smelter project at Sundergarh in Orissa and Rs 4,000 crore alumina refinery at Gujarat on fast track. We also have to remove disruptions in coal supply for smelter operations and revamp logistics of Damanjodi. The greenfield mining project at Patangi will also be expedited which will boost performance of our smelter and coal complex," Das told ET.
Das has graduated in mechanical engineering from Rourkela engineering college (now National Institute of Technology) in Odisha and has done his master in business administration (MBA) from University of Hull, Britain.
He started his career with the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited and joined Nalco in 1982. He was instrumental in formation of various marketing policies and strategies both for domestic and overseas sales and launching almost all the value added products of Nalco.
The country's leading aluminium company has been facing irregular coal supplies that threaten to disrupt its smelting operations. Nalco's rising input costs have also affected its cost advantage.
"It is really unfortunate how the company has been impacted by not having a permanent chairman," a former Nalco director said. It is the third time in the past eight years that a Nalco CMD has been forced to leave on charges of financial irregularities. As a result, the company has been sometimes functioning without a full time CMD.
