In Mexico City, the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship embarks on a dual race - one on the track, featuring fully electric competition, and the other off the track, symbolising Mexico's pursuit of the energy transition.
Mexico’s transition to sustainable energy
Mexico's dedication to advancing its shift towards sustainable energy is unmistakably evident in the high-stakes event set to unfold at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City on January 13. This marks the commencement of the tenth fully electric season of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, a showcase of zero-carbon motorsport.
Mexico stands at the forefront of efforts to decarbonise transportation as a global leader in vehicle production and a focal point for the burgeoning electric vehicle and battery plant industry. However, the commitment to enhance efficiency and expand electrification extends well beyond automobiles. ABB is spearheading initiatives to optimise industrial processes and propel advancements in smart building technology.
ABB Nogales transformer plant achieves 86% emission reduction
The ABB transformer facility in Nogales, located in the northern region of Mexico, serves a dual role as a crucial supplier of components essential for electrification and a comprehensive showcase for the benefits of digital transformation. Embracing the Mission to Zero concept, which outlines a roadmap to achieve neutrality in greenhouse gas generation by 2030, the plant has integrated systems to monitor and control energy consumption. These analytical systems interface with the ABB Ability™ Energy Manager solution, identifying opportunities to curtail energy usage.
Through initiatives like the installation of 130 solar panels in the plant's parking lot and other measures, the ABB Nogales site has achieved an impressive 86 per cent reduction in emissions. The journey towards greater sustainability continues, with the pursuit of ISO certification for energy efficiency underway. As part of ABB's Lighthouse Program, the Nogales plant stands as a beacon, exemplifying smart building technology for adoption by other companies and existing ABB facilities.
Facilities like the Nogales plant contribute to inherent sustainability advantages by enhancing manufacturing efficiencies closer to North American customers, aligning with the prevailing nearshoring trend. Beyond its primary role, ABB's expertise in sensors, control technology, and energy monitoring in Nogales has led to operational enhancements and precision in the climate systems of a medical equipment company's clean rooms, exemplifying ABB's broader impact beyond its immediate operations.
Aluminium auto components
Mexico is a powerhouse producing aluminium auto components, ranking globally as the seventh-largest producer of aluminium castings. This thriving industry plays a crucial role in Mexico's economy, contributing significantly to its GDP and employment. Mexico's proximity to the United States, a major automotive market, makes it an ideal location for manufacturers. This facilitates efficient transportation and reduces logistical costs. The Mexican government actively supports the automotive industry through favourable trade policies and incentives, further strengthening the sector's growth.
