Syntech targets EV charging infrastructure

Chinese aluminium extrusion manufacturer Syntech Metals Limited is positioning its aluminium extrusion and thermal-management capabilities to serve the growing electric vehicle charging infrastructure market in North America. Higher power density, faster charging and demanding outdoor conditions are driving the need for more effective heat management.

As EV charging systems handle higher electrical loads, thermal management has become an important part of equipment design. Syntech Metals is positioning itself as a manufacturing partner that can combine aluminium extrusion, thermal design, precision CNC machining, surface treatment and assembly, rather than simply supplying raw aluminium components.

The company supplies customised aluminium thermal-management components, including heatsinks, designed with factors such as heat dissipation, thermal performance, fin geometry and weight optimisation in mind. A recent supply deal with a Canadian community energy solutions provider highlights this focus, with Syntech Metals supplying components for its EV charging equipment. The buyer requested anonymity.

Aluminium extrusion allows manufacturers to integrate cooling structures into the mechanical design of charging equipment while retaining the lightweight properties of aluminium. For thermal-management components, factors such as fin height, thickness, spacing and geometry can affect surface area and airflow, while the profile must also remain suitable for extrusion, handling and further machining.

“Thermal management should be considered part of the product architecture, not simply a component purchased after the electrical design is complete,” said Ken Yip, Sales Director at Syntech Metals.

Yip also added, “Our role is to work with customers on extrusion design, fin geometry, material utilisation, machining and surface treatment so the final component supports both thermal performance and manufacturability.”

According to the company, its manufacturing operation covers approximately 100,000 square metres and includes aluminium extrusion and precision machining capabilities. It operates 17 extrusion presses ranging from 500 to 10,000 tonnes and has more than 30 years of experience in aluminium extrusion. The company also says it has supplied more than three million CNC-machined parts and customised aluminium extrusion profiles to customers worldwide.

Its engineering team can review customer drawings for manufacturing feasibility, develop customised extrusion moulds and optimise designs based on production and cost requirements. The manufacturing process can then extend beyond extrusion to include CNC milling, drilling, tapping, turning, cutting and other secondary processes.

For thermal-management applications, the company also offers surface treatments such as anodising and powder coating to provide corrosion resistance and durability. Its heatsink production capabilities include customised lengths, multiple surface-treatment options and CNC machining.

These considerations can be particularly important for outdoor EV charging equipment, which may be exposed to temperature fluctuations, moisture, road contaminants and extended operating cycles. Aluminium thermal solutions therefore need to balance heat dissipation, structural integrity, corrosion resistance, weight and installation requirements.

The company's wider portfolio includes aluminium profiles for industrial, automotive and solar applications. Syntech Metals says its products are exported to more than 70 countries and that its quality systems include ISO 9001:2015 and IATF 16949 certification.

For North American equipment manufacturers and energy-technology companies, Syntech Metals offers an integrated approach, managing multiple stages of component development through a single manufacturing partner.
