Labor move will benefit Chinese: Alumina

Chairman Don Morley told shareholders at the group's annual meeting in Melbourne yesterday that despite suggestions to the contrary, alumina/aluminium producers elsewhere in the world were subject to very limited greenhouse gas charges, if any.
The Chinese industry does pay a renewable energy surcharge. But the indirect (electricity) impact of that works out to about 80¢ a tonne of carbon dioxide compared with the $20-a-tonne charge that Australian emitters face.
