India’s aluminium scrap, finished and semi-finished products exports in March 2023 reflected month-on-year and year-on-year growth of 11 per cent and 15 per cent, respectively, to reach 213,960 tonnes. A month ago, India exported 193,214 tonnes of aluminium and a year earlier, the country shipped 185,687 tonnes.

Turkey was the largest importer from India in March as the former relies heavily on imports for having minimal domestic production. Turkey hauled 31,224 tonnes in March, followed by the Netherlands importing 30,288 tonnes and South Korea 22,326 tonnes.
India’s exports of aluminium semi-finished products in the said month were 180,394 tonnes, up by 8 per cent M-o-M from 166,308 tonnes. Of the total semi-finished exports in March, aluminium ingots accounted for 146,040 tonnes, alloyed billets 22,025 tonnes, and alloyed ingots 12,329 tonnes.
India’s aluminium finished products exports totalled 31,833 tonnes in March 2023, registering an increase of 8 per cent from 25,393 tonnes in February. Exports of finished longs stood at 18,639 tonnes, also up by 8 per cent month-on-month from 17,242 tonnes. Of the total finished longs exports, aluminium wires accounted for 15,794 tonnes, while aluminium bars, rods and profiles amounted to 2,845 tonnes.
Aluminium finished flats exports from India were 13,193 tonnes in March after being surged by 62 per cent M-o-M from 8,152 tonnes. Exports of aluminium rolled plates were 6,594 tonnes, and exports of foils were 6,414 tonnes.
This outcome is the result of the constant effort of Indian aluminium producers to boost their export activities over the years now. In 2019, Vedanta, India’s largest producer of aluminium and value-added products, announced that it would like to ship more than half of its production volume to international markets. In 2021, Vedanta Jharsuguda even won the Best Exporter Award for the year 2017-18 & 2018-19 at the Odisha State Export Award.
