While observing the World Environment Day on June 5, 2026, celebration and upkeep of environmental values and sustainability goals become a must. A key takeaway emerges as we look at the sustainability initiatives adopted by Vedanta Limited and its branch, Hindustan Zinc Limited, recognising and advocating measures to achieve climate goals for a greener future.
{alcircleadd}Throwing light on the renewed approach of the mining and metals sector in contributing to environmental well-being, the Chairperson of Hindustan Zinc, Priya Agarwal Hebbar, notes, “At Hindustan Zinc, we believe the future of mining is about producing the metals the world needs while leaving a lighter footprint on the planet.”

Upholding the essence of Viksit Bharat as envisioned by the Government of India, Ms Hebbar refers to the roles of zinc and silver in “enabling infrastructure, clean energy, and economic growth.” She emphasises the responsibility to “ensure that this future is built on innovation, resource efficiency, and environmental stewardship.”
As the company advances from becoming “one of the world's most water-positive metals companies to scaling renewable energy, circular solutions, electric mobility, and low-carbon products,” it aims to materialise its reimagination of “sustainable mining”.
The vision remains in line with that of the Founder and Chairman of Vedanta Resources Limited, Anil Agarwal. “Environmental activism…is widespread all over the world,” and “we have to realise that these are basic materials on which civilisation depends. We need to tap natural resources in a sustainable manner,” he observed.
Ms Hebbar, therefore, states the function of mining, which is “about creating lasting value. Value for the environment, for communities, and for the generations that will inherit the world we help shape.”
Hindustan Zinc’s HZDA (Hindustan Zinc Die-Casting Alloy) is produced using primary zinc and pure aluminium and is designed for die-cast components used in automobiles, household appliances, sanitary ware and defence equipment.
It offers good strength, dimensional accuracy, surface finish, and wear resistance while serving as a substitute for imported zinc alloys.
For galvanising applications, zinc-aluminium alloys also help improve the corrosion protection of steel, extending the service life of automotive, infrastructure and construction components exposed to harsh environments.
As zinc and aluminium advance the nation’s sustainability goals, Vedanta Limited and Hindustan Zinc solidify their footprint by reimagining a greener mining and metal industry.
