The FIFA World Cup 2026 is expected to drive a surge in drink can consumption across the UK, with an estimated 2 billion cans likely to be used during the tournament, according to Recycle Now and Every Can Counts.
{alcircleadd}If all of those cans are collected and recycled, they would have an estimated market value of around GBP 28.5 million (USD 38.48 million), based on current aluminium scrap prices.
The organisations said aluminium cans remain one of the most valuable and widely recycled packaging materials. On average, used beverage cans are worth about GBP 1,000 (USD 1,350) per tonne in the recycling market.
The campaign aims to encourage football fans to recycle their empty cans while watching matches at home, in public venues or at fan events.

According to Every Can Counts, aluminium can be recycled repeatedly without losing its properties, allowing used cans to return to store shelves as new products in as little as 60 days.
Recycling rates are important in reducing emissions and keeping valuable materials circulating, the organisations said. Recycling some 10 billion aluminium cans across the UK each year prevents an estimated 3 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.
As well as its World Cup campaign, Every Can Counts will keep promoting drink-can recycling with events and public awareness activities, including appearances at music festivals and other major events.
The initiative highlights the growing attention being given to aluminium recycling as the need for sustainable packaging and circular economy solutions continues to grow.
