Federal Metal Co., Bedford, USA, has announced an investment of around $17.8 million in building and equipping a facility in North Little Rock, Arkansas, to melt post-consumer aluminium-copper radiators to create recycled-content metal products.

According to Peter Nagusky, Federal Metal’s president and CEO, exporting scrap radiators to other countries is a waste. Instead, domestic semi-finished copper and aluminium producers must increase the use of scrap than primary metal to enhance the recycled content of products. It is economically advantageous and also environmentally sustainable.
“Major investments in new mill, foundry and refining capacity are underway in the United States for the first time in generations, and it’s important the scrap industry here keeps pace to assure the domestic supply chain is well fed,” said Peter Nagusky.
The new facility is a state-of-the-art project that involves advanced sorting technologies to generate high purity 1100 aluminum for direct melting, and C110 copper for direct melting.
Federal Metal Co. has chosen North Little Rock as the project location because it is close to supplier partners and key customers. The company is looking forward to a long partnership with the city of North Little Rock and the state of Arkansas. Utilizing the skills and talent available within a mile of downtown, Federal Metal Co. is mulling to grow in the sector, creating 40 new jobs.
Federal Metal has started hiring for the new facility and ordering new equipment. By mid-2023, the facility is expected to become operational, with the ability to recycle more than 3,000 tonnes per month of aluminium-copper radiators in North Little Rock.
“This investment and our recent acquisition in eastern Pennsylvania are made with conviction in the future growth and competitiveness of U.S. nonferrous metals manufacturing,” added Nagusky.
“Arkansas is home to skilled workers, pro-business policies and world-class hospitality. Companies like Federal Metal are starting to notice, and we’re excited to welcome them to our state,” said Arkansas Governor Sarah Sanders.
In 2020, Federal Metal developed its pre-melt specification aluminium products, which were known to offer cost savings to rolling mills that would otherwise be using more expensive prime aluminium or aluminium remelt secondary ingot.
