The Environmental Trust Ireland (ETI), an environmental organisation, is set to initiate a High Court case regarding the proposed expansion plans of the Russian Aughinish Alumina refinery in County Limerick. Scheduled to begin on March 4, the case relates to proposals to increase the height of the bauxite residue, i.e., red mud, storage area from 32 metres to 44 metres or 144 feet.

ETI has also expressed concerns over plans to expand the refinery’s quarry blasting area by an additional 9.6 acres, bringing the total quarry footprint to 20.75 acres.
ETI is represented by the law firm, Hayes Solicitors Limerick. The president of the environmental organisation is the Limerick solicitor Michelle Hayes. The case was referred to by Ms Hayes as a “David v Goliath situation.”
“Environmental Trust Ireland is a voice for the environment and the protection of human health. Independent of political, commercial, and industrial interests,” she stated. In her opinion, to maintain balance between the community and industry, the natural environment is to be looked after.
ETI has outlined several environmental considerations, including the proximity of the quarry blasting area to the bauxite residue disposal site. The organisation has raised concerns that blasting activity could potentially affect the stability of the red mud area, which could result in a delicate outcome situation for the Shannon Estuary.
Ms Hayes also highlighted the well-being of “the dolphins which inhabit the Shannon Estuary” and advised reviewing the “impacts of quarry blasting noise” and related consequences. “The estuary is unique and biodiversity-rich, which is recognised and protected at [the] European level. It is irreplaceable,” Ms Hayes added.
The High Court proceedings will examine the issues raised in relation to environmental protection and operational safeguards associated with the proposed expansion.
