Estimated aluminum demand in US and Canada up 4.4%

Aluminum demand in the United States and Canada (shipments by domestic producers plus imports) totaled an estimated 1,996 million pounds during January 2013, up 4.4 percent over January of 2012. Demand for semi-fabricated (mill) products totaled 1,299 million pounds, rising 4.2 percent. Apparent consumption (demand less exports) in domestic markets totaled an estimated 1,671 million pounds, 4.4 percent above last year.
Exports of aluminum from the U.S. and Canada (excluding cross-border trade) totaled 635 million pounds in January, 1.9 percent below a year ago while aluminum imports totaled 425 million pounds, were off 6.5 percent from last year.
