Net income attributable to Novelis' common shareholders increased 29 per cent to USD 210 million, compared with USD 163 million a year earlier. Excluding special items, net income also rose 29 per cent to USD 146 million. Explore further insights and forecasts for the aluminium flat rolled products...

From raw resources to battery-ready materials: Australia's downstream ambitions take shape

Australia could turn more of its aluminium and copper resources into higher-value battery components, with a new report from national science agency CSIRO identifying opportunities to strengthen the country's domestic battery manufacturing capabilities. The report, The Future of Australian Battery Manufacturing: Cell Cans and Current Collector Foils, examines how Australia could use its existing industrial expertise, materials and manufacturing capabilities to produce key components for lithium-ion and emerging sodium-ion batteries. Rather than focusing solely on the country's critical mineral resources, the analysis explores practical ways to move further downstream and capture more value through local manufacturing. The opportunity comes as global demand for batteries continues to grow,...

Germany-France aluminium FRP trade 2026 at $692m: Two-way exchange of coil, sheet, foil and high-value products

Germany and France share one of Europe’s busiest downstream aluminium corridors, and the metal flows in both directions. In the first seven months of 2026, aluminium flat rolled products (FRP), which cover aluminium plates, sheets and strips (HS code: 7606), as well as aluminium foil (HS code: 7607), crossed the border each way, amounting to a total of around USD 692 million. However, the bilateral trade flow is tilted towards Germany, which remains France’s largest FRP supplier. Nonetheless, the inter-dependence remains as the countries do exchange the same products but engage in cross-border trade of specialised high-value products and alloys, feeding the demand on either side. The trade figures for January–July 2026, as compiled from the International Trade Administration, highlight...

Alcoa on way to meeting revenue growth goals

Aluminum producer Alcoa is well on the way to reaching its increased revenue growth targets for two of its businesses, Chief Executive Officer Klaus Kleinfeld said. The company also said production costs should come down when a new Saudi Arabian smelter starts up, and it expects to profit more from a change in its contract pricing system as global metal demand continues to rise. “On rolled products — we set a target of adding $2.5 billion revenue to the top line by 2013,” he said of the business that produces flat-rolled aluminum for the auto and aviation markets, among others. “I believe we will get 50 to 60 percent of that revenue growth this year,” Kleinfeld said at the company’s investor day meeting at an Alcoa plant in Davenport, Iowa. Aluminum Association ‘Aluminum Highlights’ for the week ending Friday, November 4.

The impact of the Eurozone crisis on price and demand has been dramatic. Aluminium prices currently trade at a around $2150/t, well below the marginal cost of production. And global demand prospects have weakened. In Europe, sheet and extrusion markets are now declining, with prospects for 2012 looking sluggish. Demand prospects have dimmed also in North America, although markets such as transportation and solar provide some optimism for growth. China does not seem to be coming to the rescue either. Demand is reported be weakening in China – partly on much lower exports of sheet - while there is softness evident in domestic white goods markets, as credit tightening bites. With smelter production rates up in September, both in China and in the rest of the world, the market surplus can only...

Chalieco and Mibam sign agreement for Alcasa upgrade

B N Americas reported that Chinese company Chalieco, a subsidiary of state owned Chinalco, has signed USD 430 million agreements with Venezuela's basic industries and mining ministry to upgrade technology at state aluminum reducer Alcasa. The agreement was reached after modifications were made during negotiations to propose a new recovery plan for Alcasa. Chinalco took charge of the 2 year plan to restore operating levels at Alcasa in March. The plan involved building a 40,000 tonne per year extrusion plant and updating the smelting and rolling areas and lines 3 and 4. However, the original proposal did not meet Alcasa's expectations and had to be revised. Chalieco will now provide the parts for the plant's recovery but Alcasa will be responsible for the works. Chalieco will also be in...
