Australia could turn more of its aluminium and copper resources into higher-value battery components, with a new report from national science agency CSIRO identifying opportunities to strengthen the country's domestic battery manufacturing capabilities. The report, The Future of Australian Battery Manufacturing: Cell Cans and Current Collector Foils, examines how Australia could use its existing industrial expertise, materials and manufacturing capabilities to produce key components for lithium-ion and emerging sodium-ion batteries. Rather than focusing solely on the country's critical mineral resources, the analysis explores practical ways to move further downstream and capture more value through local manufacturing. The opportunity comes as global demand for batteries continues to grow,...
Germany and France share one of Europe’s busiest downstream aluminium corridors, and the metal flows in both directions. In the first seven months of 2026, aluminium flat rolled products (FRP), which cover aluminium plates, sheets and strips (HS code: 7606), as well as aluminium foil (HS code: 7607), crossed the border each way, amounting to a total of around USD 692 million. However, the bilateral trade flow is tilted towards Germany, which remains France’s largest FRP supplier. Nonetheless, the inter-dependence remains as the countries do exchange the same products but engage in cross-border trade of specialised high-value products and alloys, feeding the demand on either side. The trade figures for January–July 2026, as compiled from the International Trade Administration, highlight...

SMM sources report that aluminum plate, sheet and strip producers faced growing difficulties in destocking. Finished product inventories at many aluminum plate, sheet and strip producers account for 50% of or even exceed their current monthly output, and few producers can keep inventories below 33% of monthly output. Tight cash flows force most producers to accelerate the destocking, but declining exports and weakening domestic demand greatly affected sales of aluminum plate, sheet and strip. Many aluminum plate, sheet and strip producers are pessimistic toward the market outlook given sluggish construction and home appliance sectors and the destocking activity will continue for a long term.

Emirates Aluminium, or Emal, one of the largest aluminium companies, has set up a plant in this industrial zone. Also, it wants to offer at least 30% of its production in liquid metal to downstream units, thus saving them additional costs involved in first purchasing billets, re-melting them and then making aluminium products. The rest of the production will be in the form of billets, slabs and rods — both as pure aluminium and as alloys. This could accelerate the export of bauxite to Kizad, as making aluminium there will be that much cheaper. It could also mean that some large producers of downstream aluminium products in India may opt to shift base to Kizad, he says.

China’s Shandong Nanshan Aluminum plans to spend RMB6.19bn ($973M) on constructing a production line for aluminium alloy with a 200kt/y capacity. The plan also includes three casting production lines in a casting workshop, a hot-rolling production line, and facilities that will manufacture aluminium plates and strips as well as thin boards. The annual production capacities of this program are expected to 50kt/y of aluminium plates, 50kt/y of thin boards of aluminium alloy, and 100kt/y of aluminium strips. The plates manufactured by the plant are used in aviation products, ships, tools, container tanks and trains. The thin boards are used in aviation, automotive and tanks. It is expected to take three years to build.
