Germany and France share one of Europe’s busiest downstream aluminium corridors, and the metal flows in both directions. In the first seven months of 2026, aluminium flat rolled products (FRP), which cover aluminium plates, sheets and strips (HS code: 7606), as well as aluminium foil (HS code: 7607), crossed the border each way, amounting to a total of around USD 692 million. However, the bilateral trade flow is tilted towards Germany, which remains France’s largest FRP supplier. Nonetheless, the inter-dependence remains as the countries do exchange the same products but engage in cross-border trade of specialised high-value products and alloys, feeding the demand on either side. The trade figures for January–July 2026, as compiled from the International Trade Administration, highlight...

It takes money to make money. Most investors know that, but with business media so focused on the "how much," very few investors bother to ask, "How fast?" When judging a company's prospects, how quickly it turns cash outflows into cash inflows can be just as important as how much profit it's booking in the accounting fantasy world we call "earnings." This is one of the first metrics I check when I'm hunting for the market's best stocks. Today, we'll see how it applies to Kaiser Aluminum (NAS: KALU) . Let's break this down In this series, we measure how swiftly a company turns cash into goods or services and back into cash. We'll use a quick, relatively foolproof tool known as the cash conversion cycle, or CCC for short. Why does the CCC matter? The less time it takes a firm to convert...

The production volume of aluminium castings has declined by 40% in the past decade, Aluminium Federation of South Africa (Afsa) vice-chairperson Bob Stone tells Engineering News. This is despite South Africa’s growing automotive industry, which will inevitably develop a need for more metal casting components from foundries, he says, adding that foundries are struggling to secure contracts to supply components to the automotive industry. Many, in fact, have closed shop, with many more struggling to keep up with rising electricity costs. Major automotive piston manufacturers Federal-Mogul and Kolbenco for instance, had to shut their doors in 2007 and 2008 respectively, leaving South Africa with no local automotive piston manufacturers. Stone attributes this to the high price of raw...
