Towering aluminum star to adorn Barrhaven park toboggan hill

If you've been to the newly named James Bartleman Archives and Materials Centre, or simply live near Algonquin College, you might be familiar with the work of Kingston artist Don Maynard.

Maynard was commissioned to build the sprawling abstract sculpture, simply titled "Archive," that adorns the Tallwood Drive facility. (That's it above, as seen from beneath.) And now, he's been asked by the city to install a new work—this time, a gigantic aluminum star—at the top of a toboggan hill at a brand new Barrhaven Park:

The city announced today that Maynard had won the Half Moon Bay Park public art competition. From their release:

An omen of good luck and harbinger of change and new beginnings, Falling Star will be a beacon of magical possibilities and imagination in a new and rapidly growing neighbourhood. Balanced on one of its five points, the 15-foot high cast aluminum star will be anchored in the ground, bridging the immense gap between the galaxy above and our place on earth. Maynard will transform the surface of the aluminum, covering it in organic, hand-carved markings, crevasses, protrusions and deep gouges alluding to the stars’ long and awe-inspiring journey.

The aluminum star will also "shimmer" at night, thanks to a series of holes drilled into the sculpture, the city's announcement notes. Construction of Half Moon Bay Park began last fall, and based on the call for submissions, it's expected that Falling Star will be installed in the summer of 2013.
