From raw resources to battery-ready materials: Australia's downstream ambitions take shape

Australia could turn more of its aluminium and copper resources into higher-value battery components, with a new report from national science agency CSIRO identifying opportunities to strengthen the country's domestic battery manufacturing capabilities. The report, The Future of Australian Battery Manufacturing: Cell Cans and Current Collector Foils, examines how Australia could use its existing industrial expertise, materials and manufacturing capabilities to produce key components for lithium-ion and emerging sodium-ion batteries. Rather than focusing solely on the country's critical mineral resources, the analysis explores practical ways to move further downstream and capture more value through local manufacturing. The opportunity comes as global demand for batteries continues to grow,...

Germany-France aluminium FRP trade 2026 dips to $692m but specialised exchange holds strong

Germany and France share one of Europe’s busiest downstream aluminium corridors, and the metal flows in both directions. In the first seven months of 2026, aluminium flat rolled products (FRP), which cover aluminium plates, sheets and strips (HS code: 7606), as well as aluminium foil (HS code: 7607), crossed the border each way, amounting to a total of around USD 692 million. However, the bilateral trade flow is tilted towards Germany, which remains France’s largest FRP supplier. Nonetheless, the inter-dependence remains as the countries do exchange the same products but engage in cross-border trade of specialised high-value products and alloys, feeding the demand on either side. The trade figures for January–July 2026, as compiled from the International Trade Administration, highlight...

Rusal's production of rare-earth and transition metals aluminium alloys to create wire rod for the cable industry has completed the R&D and facilities set-up stage and entered production, the Russian aluminium producer said Monday. A multifunctional casting, rolling and pressing facility is currently being installed at the company's Irkutsk aluminium smelter which is capable of producing 2,200 mt/month of different sorts of wire rod from aluminium alloys with rare-earth and transition metals. This product is in great demand by the cable industry, Rusal said. "Cables made from the new wire rod have much better characteristics. Their durability and resistance to temperature is about 50% higher than normal ones have," said Rusal's technical director, Viktor Mann, in a statement. "Rusal's...

2013 Range Rover cuts weight with aluminum body

The redesigned 2013 Range Rover SUV goes on sale in the U.S. market in December featuring a sharply lighter body, improved fuel economy and better handling. The five-seat Range Rover has an all-aluminum unibody structure--a first for an SUV, Land Rover said. The body is 39 percent lighter than the steel-bodied 2012 Range Rover. Land Rover said the U.S.-specific model with a 5.0-liter V8 engine is 700 pounds lighter than the current model. Range Rover said performance and fuel economy will improve but did not provide more specific information. Pricing will be disclosed in September. Styling hasn't radically changed except for the sleeker lines and headlights that are similar to those on the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque compact SUV. The tailgate design has also been modified. "The new...

Hindalco may double sales in five years on Audi, Jaguar Orders

Hindalco Industries Ltd. (HNDL), the world’s biggest supplier of aluminum to carmakers, may double group sales to $33 billion in five years as Audi AG (NSU) and other European carmakers swap steel with the lightweight metal. “Automobiles are a huge prospect,” Debnarayan Bhattacharya, managing director of India’s second-largest producer of the metal, said in an interview. “The European auto market is booming. New environmental norms are an opportunity for aluminum makers.” Billionaire Kumar Mangalam Birla’s flagship, contending with falling metal prices and rising costs, is betting regulation to cut carbon emissions and improve fuel efficiency in the U.S. and Europe will prompt carmakers to use more aluminum. Jaguar Land Rover plans to start selling its first all-aluminum Range Rover SUV...

Aluminum price hit by a supply overhang: Novelis CEO

Aluminum prices are likely to stay near their current low levels for the next nine to 12 months, pressured by a supply overhang of the lightweight metal, the chief executive of aluminum products maker Novelis Inc. said Tuesday. Benchmark aluminum prices on the London Metal Exchange have traded near two-year lows for weeks, on a surplus of metal and production capacity, as well as on worries about demand amid slowing growth in China and the financial struggles in the euro zone. Aluminum for delivery in three months recently traded at $1,849 a metric ton, down from almost $2,600 a metric ton a year ago. Prices are likely to "hover at this level" for as much as a year, Novelis Chief Executive Phil Martens said in an interview. He said the smelter shutdowns some aluminum makers had announced...

Aluminum can plant to shut down,110 jobs at stake

An aluminum can plant on Columbus’ far east side is closing, putting 110 employees out of work. Broomfield, Colo.-based Ball Corp. (NYSE:BLL), which bought the plant in 2009 from Anheuser-Busch InBev (NYSE:BUD), said after the markets closed Wednesday that it would shut its Central Ohio plant and one in Gainesville, Fla., by the end of the year. The Florida plant has 125 workers. “These actions are in response to a loss of standard 12-ounce beverage can volume beginning Jan. 1, 2013, as well as continued growth in specialty beverage can packaging, which is an increasingly important part of our business,” Ball Chief Operating Officer Raymond Seabrook said in a news release. The 250,000-square-foot plant at 350 McCormick Blvd. near Reynoldsburg opened in 1977, according to Ball’s website....

Novelis compensates for Hindalco's domestic losses

Hindalco Industries Ltd’s domestic operations struggled in the aftermath of lower metal volumes and prices, even as costs headed north. The only spot of good news is that Novelis Inc., its international subsidiary, is doing well as rising conversion premiums for its value-added aluminium products have helped profits grow. The company’s domestic business performance is visible in its stand-alone results. During the quarter, Hindalco said that “operational disturbances” affected its aluminium output, which declined by 12% sequentially. Its copper cathode output declined by 26%, as it executed a planned maintenance shutdown. Aluminium realizations during the quarter declined by 24% year-on-year and by 9% sequentially. The combined effect of lower volumes and realizations saw sales decline by...
