Germany and France share one of Europe’s busiest downstream aluminium corridors, and the metal flows in both directions. In the first seven months of 2026, aluminium flat rolled products (FRP), which cover aluminium plates, sheets and strips (HS code: 7606), as well as aluminium foil (HS code: 7607), crossed the border each way, amounting to a total of around USD 692 million. However, the bilateral trade flow is tilted towards Germany, which remains France’s largest FRP supplier. Nonetheless, the inter-dependence remains as the countries do exchange the same products but engage in cross-border trade of specialised high-value products and alloys, feeding the demand on either side. The trade figures for January–July 2026, as compiled from the International Trade Administration, highlight...

A research team from the University of Exeter, UK, has developed a method for making three-dimensional aluminium composite parts by mixing metal powders to form tiny particles. To carry out this new technique, the researchers use a laser to melt a mixture of powders, composed of aluminium and a reactive reinforcing material for example an iron oxide combination. A reaction between the powders results in the formation of new particles that are 600 times smaller than the width of a human hair, around 100 nm. The reaction uniformly distributes them through the material, where they act as reinforcements. The process is based on selective laser manufacturing (SLM), in which laser manufactures parts from metal powders. It allows parts with complex shapes to be easily produced. The new materials...

A Chinese train maker said Wednesday it will sell components to German engineering giant Siemens, in what will be the first time Chinese high-speed train parts have been exported to Europe. The deal, reportedly worth more than 11 million euros ($13.6 million), will see parts including some aluminium-alloy car bodies shipped to Europe, said an official with the state-owned China CNR Corporation Limited. He said it marks the first time that such Chinese train parts will be exported to the continent. "(Siemens) will place more orders as long as the first order passes their checks," said the official, who declined to be named. "They are likely to make China a regular supplier of such parts." China has built the world's largest high-speed rail system from scratch in less than a decade, but the...

With the development of global casting industry, the demands of castings also increased. Since many car makers use aluminium castings to replace ash iron castings these years stimulate the increasing demand of aluminum castings. China alumina and electrolytic aluminium prodution all rank first in the world, abundant labour resource and huge market laid a good development foundation for China aluminum alloy casting industry. Strived by global economic integration, the casting production center will move to China gradually. Die-castings occupied around one third of the whole aluminum alloy castings. We can figure out that the production of China aluminum castings and aluminum alloy die-castings increased continuously in recent years, global ratio also improved.

Shares of Kaiser Aluminum Corp (KALU) are up more than 15% so far in 2012. However, KALU's performance so far in 2012 is very impressive relative to its peers. Other leading Aluminum companies such as Alcoa (AA), Century Aluminum Co (CENX), Alumina Ltd (AWC), and Aluminum Corp of China (ACH) are all down so far in 2012. Fabrication vs Production Unlike its peers, KALU is focused on the fabrication side of the aluminum business, not the production of primary aluminum. Because of this, KALU has not been hurt by weak aluminum prices. To the contrary, lower aluminum prices have helped KALU report record earnings for the first half of 2012. Since KALU is in fabrication business, this means that the company sells finished aluminum products to companies in the aerospace and automotive sector....

A $30 million Tomago cable factory has won state government approval. The NSW Planning decision paves the way for Bahrain-based Midal Cables to forge ahead with a new plant on the eastern edge of the existing Tomago Aluminium site. The new project could be a substantial boost for the region’s aluminium sector, which has suffered significant job losses already this year. When operational, the Midal plant will allow the cables to be made from hot metal direct from the smelter. The proximity to Tomago Aluminium will also remove the need to cool or cast the resource before it is recast into products. The Newcastle Herald reported last year that about 50,000 tonnes or a tenth of Tomago Aluminium’s output could be made into rods and conductors under Midal’s full capacity.

ABB has secured a $9m contract to oversee maintenance procedures at a rolling mill of the Oman Aluminium Rolling Company (OARC) at the eventual site of the company’s facility in Sohar. The Greenfield Aluminium Rolling Mill will produce flat sheet and aluminium foil and have a capacity of 140,000 tonnes a year. The primary markets for the product will be the Middle East and Europe, with the projected completion date likely to be sometime in the third quarter of 2013, when operations are due to commence. ABB will develop, implement and execute all maintenance activities at the rolling mill.

Norsk Hydro ASA (NHY), Europe’s third- largest aluminum maker, is cutting capacity at plants where it uses third-party metal to make orders for the auto and building industries after suffering losses. The company will shut 35,000 metric tons of remelting capacity at its Sunndal plant in Norway and is considering plans to curtail about 120,000 tons of capacity at its Aardal plant, company spokesman Halvor Molland said by phone today. It will increase primary aluminum production at Sunndal. Hydro, which is seeking to reduce the cost of aluminum production by $300 a ton, has been cutting production at non- profitable plants this year. In July, the company said it would close its 180,000 ton-capacity Kurri Kurri smelter in Australia. Hydro began talks with unions and management at Aardal...

Apple’s earliest iPhone prototypes were unearthed during the trial between Apple and Samsung last week, and further investigation into older court filings from the case have revealed some of the reasons behind Apple’s decisions for the design of its smartphone. Networkworld’s Yoni Heisler reports that Samsung’s attorney has questioned former Industrial Design Creative Lead at Apple, Douglas Satzger, who is now the Vice President of Industrial Design at Intel. Satzger worked on the original iPhone, the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 3GS. Satzger told Samsung’s attorney that Apple’s industrial design team had a strong interest in developing an iPhone with shaped glass on both the front and the back of the device. The reason Apple decided against this design for the iPhone was because it would be...

Norwegian aluminium firm Norsk Hydro has agreed to sell its Portalex extrusion plant in Cacem, Portugal, to Germany's Bavaria Industriekapital AG for an undisclosed sum, the company said on Wednesday. The transaction is expected to close on Aug. 31, Hydro said, adding that the plant, which handles extrusion and product finishing, employs about 170 people. "Portalex, as the company is known in the market, has felt the downturn in the Portuguese market and struggled over the last years," Hydro said.

Hydro is making adjustments to the structure of its aluminum extrusion network in the United States. The company has today announced that it will cease extrusion operations at its facility in Missouri, and that it will bring new fabrication activities to its plant in Arizona. The Monett-based plant, located in the southwest part of Missouri, was built in 1964 and acquired by Hydro in 2000. Profitability at the extrusion site has been an issue for many years, despite internal improvements, and demand in its key market segment – building and construction – has been soft and remains uncertain. Matthew Dionne, president of Hydro’s North American aluminum extrusion business, says the company explored divestment of the plant before deciding to close the extrusion and fabrication activities....
