From raw resources to battery-ready materials: Australia's downstream ambitions take shape

Australia could turn more of its aluminium and copper resources into higher-value battery components, with a new report from national science agency CSIRO identifying opportunities to strengthen the country's domestic battery manufacturing capabilities. The report, The Future of Australian Battery Manufacturing: Cell Cans and Current Collector Foils, examines how Australia could use its existing industrial expertise, materials and manufacturing capabilities to produce key components for lithium-ion and emerging sodium-ion batteries. Rather than focusing solely on the country's critical mineral resources, the analysis explores practical ways to move further downstream and capture more value through local manufacturing. The opportunity comes as global demand for batteries continues to grow,...

Germany-France aluminium FRP trade 2026 dips to $692m but specialised exchange holds strong

Germany and France share one of Europe’s busiest downstream aluminium corridors, and the metal flows in both directions. In the first seven months of 2026, aluminium flat rolled products (FRP), which cover aluminium plates, sheets and strips (HS code: 7606), as well as aluminium foil (HS code: 7607), crossed the border each way, amounting to a total of around USD 692 million. However, the bilateral trade flow is tilted towards Germany, which remains France’s largest FRP supplier. Nonetheless, the inter-dependence remains as the countries do exchange the same products but engage in cross-border trade of specialised high-value products and alloys, feeding the demand on either side. The trade figures for January–July 2026, as compiled from the International Trade Administration, highlight...

Noranda Aluminum on credit watch with negative implications

Ratings Agency Standard & Poor's said Thursday it was putting Noranda Aluminum on credit watch with negative implications, pending a review to be completed in several weeks. S&P like Platts, is a division of the McGraw Hill Companies. Noranda was increasingly likely to fall short of its previous EBITDA expectations for 2012 and 2013, as aluminum prices are under pressure due to concerns about Chinese demand growth, the weak Eurozone and a stronger US dollar, the ratings agency said. S&P had earlier expected Noranda to generate EBITDA of between $150 million and $200 million, based on an assumed average London Metals Exchange aluminum price of $0.95/lb and a Midwest premium (the cost of freight and handling to ship aluminum from LME warehouses to the US Midwest) of $0.05/lb. It noted that...

VHE Releases Laser Level Sensors for the Aluminium Industry

VHE Laser Level Sensors are the latest evolution of VHE's proven aluminium metal level sensors. These laser sensors precisely measure the level of molten aluminium in casting machines and launders. They are fully compatible with all earlier models of VHE level sensors and will operate at a higher sensitivity with a minor software upgrade. The new laser sensors have been fully designed and developed by VHE, with detailed proving trials in partnership with Rio Tinto Alcan. VHE's aluminium level sensors are available with either one or two lasers. The twin laser model is able to determine the aluminium level in a slab relative to the mould top without the use of any additional sensor. The single laser model is particularly suited to launder level measurement. Both models are enclosed in an...

Saudi Arabian mining firm Ma'aden, in a joint venture with Alcoa, is undertaking a $ 10.8 billion project to set up what has been dubbed as the the world's largest vertically integrated aluminium complex. "This smelter could make the production of aluminum in Saudi Arabia very competitive. So taking a really long-term view, if we put an assembly plant there with a large press shop, given our...

Aluminium fabricators in Ghaziabad India ready to face the changing market

The realty sector of Ghaziabad and nearby areas has paved way for the growth of several allied industries. Of these the aluminium fabrication industry has been reaping profits in the region, owing to the various advantages aluminium has over wood, iron and other material used for construction purposes. But aluminium fabricators now face stiff competition from Unplasticised Polyvinyl Chloride (uPVC) - a new raw material, which is being preferred over aluminium. This has forced aluminium fabricators to innovate to adapt to the changing needs of the market. Satish Kumar of Indirapuram-based Shubham Aluminium informed that the market has been changing over the years, "Earlier it was wood that was used. It was replaced by mild steel and then by aluminium and now uPVC is being preferred."...

European aluminium foil deliveries down 2% in the first half of 2012

European aluminium foil deliveries saw a modest decline of 2% in the first half of 2012, the European Aluminium Foil Association said this week. EAFA issues periodical statements on foil deliveries. Total deliveries in H1 fell 2% to 411,500 mt from 420,100 mt in H1 2011. Thinner foil gauges used in flexible packaging and household foil saw a decline of 2%, while thicker gauges used for semi-rigid containers and technical applications fell almost 8%, the EAFA said. However, the EAFA also said that these figures masked a better performance in the second quarter of 2012. "We are confident that total production for the whole year will match results from last year," EAFA executive director Stefan Grimm said. Entrances and windows from Kawneer Company, Inc. and Traco, both leading Alcoa (NYSE:AA) Building and Construction Systems' brands, were used to help rebuild the schools. The original elementary and secondary school buildings had used entrances and windows from Kawneer and Traco; and the products were selected for the rebuild because of their strength, functionality and durability. According to Alan Gates of Louisville, Kentucky-based Stanley Shultze & Co. Inc., the project's glazing contractor and installer, the Alcoa products held up against the tornado. He noted, "Of all of the window and door units throughout the buildings, only one window...
