KAP Minerals and Cymat sign MoU to develop Canadian scandium-aluminium alloy supply chain

KAP Minerals and Cymat Technologies are exploring a partnership to produce scandium-aluminium master alloy in Ontario, following the signing of a memorandum of understanding. The partnership would use scandium oxide from KAP’s Kapuskasing critical minerals project and Cymat’s aluminium-processing technology to produce alloys for aerospace, defence and manufacturing applications. To know the global production, demand and consumption forecasts of aluminium extrusions, explore our report " The World of Aluminium Extrusions to 2035 " Scandium-aluminium alloys can improve strength, performance and weldability while reducing weight. The companies aim to use the proposed venture to establish a domestic supply chain, converting Canadian critical minerals into value-added industrial materials....

Insulating profiles for aluminum window systems

Producers of aluminum window systems can make more sustainable products by using insulating profiles made from its EcoPaXX® polyamide 410, a polymer with a bio-based content of 70%. Aluminum window suppliers are looking for new ways to bring more sustainable products to the market, and EcoPaXX provides them with an excellent opportunity to do so. Aluminum frames incorporate insulating profiles to provide a thermal break between the profiles that eventually become part of the inside and outside of a building respectively. The thermal breaks also contribute to the mechanical integrity of the windows, and so need to be made in high performance materials, currently still mainly polyamide 66. These highly engineered thermal breaks make an important contribution to the energy efficiency of the...

Contest for Lighter-Weight Metals Helps Auto Makers

Car makers turning to aluminum, at the expense of steel, to make lighter vehicles have steelmakers fighting back with major new investments to preserve market share in one of their most valuable markets. The metals-contest comes as auto makers look to build lighter cars, which tend to be more fuel efficient, in order to meet new fuel-economy regulations. Languishing aluminum prices also are encouraging the automotive industry to switch metals. For steelmakers, struggling with weak demand and over supply, a switch to aluminum poses a big threat because the automotive sector is the industry’s second biggest customer—after construction—accounting for about 12% of total production, according to the World Steel Association. “It’s all about weight saving, and the associated costs that go with...

Commodity warehouse ownership rules need rethink -report

Conflicts of interest over ownership of commodity warehouses can inflate prices of raw materials such as aluminium, a report by two Brussels think-tanks said on Tuesday. It is likely to add to market pressure to reform the London Metal Exchange's (LME) storage system, in which companies such as Glencore and Goldman Sachs have been able to make profits from holding big inventories. The report published on Tuesday follows more than a year of data-gathering to assess the relationship between physical raw materials and derivatives markets. It was carried out by the Brussels-based Centre for European Policy Studies and the European Capital Markets Institute, whose views often feed into debate within the European Commission, the EU executive. Big industrial metals users, including Novelis which...

Japanese company's links with Queen's University pays off

A Japanese firm with a base in Co Antrim has slashed costs thanks to a three-year link-up with Queen's University. Ryobi Aluminium Casting manufactures aluminium die cast products for the European automotive market. The company used around £460,000 of support from Invest NI to collaborate with the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Queen's University Belfast to cut down on the overall cost of each of its castings. John Hughes, managing director of Ryobi Aluminium Casting, said that the link-up has enabled the company to develop knowledge and expertise in new areas which will have long-term benefits. "The enhancements we've made to our processes as a result of this research and development project have not only created cost savings but put us in a stronger, more competitive...

The German aluminium packaging market

The optimism that still prevailed among suppliers of aluminium packaging at the end of the first quarter has all but evaporated in favour of disillusionment. Beverage can producers in particular are dissatisfied with the second quarter. Producers of tubes and aerosols are a little more conciliatory since at least demand is passable in both these segments, but the rising cost pressure is testing their strength. Almost all EUWID respondents from the packaging sector emphasise how hard they are being hit by labour expenses: Bavaria’s wage agreement has been adopted by all German states, according to the German union IG Metall.

Japan bid to make infrastructure earthquake-resistant boosts aluminum demand

Increased spending by the Japanese government on making infrastructure earthquake-resistant has fueled demand for aluminum, but that for aluminum ingot is still weak amid high stocks, market sources said Monday. Sales of aluminum floor sheets, roofing, handrails and other components used to build pedestrian bridges, for example, and public facilities have increased by 50% since April compared with the first quarter, said a trader who deals with finished aluminum products. "Due to more projects, orders for aluminum structural parts for buildings and bridges, to replace concrete, have gone up," a Tokyo-based trader said. "This is because aluminum parts are lighter and will not cause as much damage in case they fall." Japan Aluminium Association member firms making semi-finished aluminum...

Constellium receives “buy” rating from Goldman Sachs analysts

Equities researchers at Goldman Sachs initiated coverage on shares of Constellium in a research report issued on Tuesday. The firm set a “buy” rating and a $21.00 price target on the stock. The analysts wrote, “We initiate on Constellium (CSTM) with a Buy rating and 6-month price target of $21, 29% upside from current levels. We see CSTM as one of the best-positioned companies in our coverage with exposure to strong and growing aerospace markets, and a solid beneficiary of the rising steel-to-aluminum substitution in the automotive industry. Its strong position in the stable and modestly growing European beverage can market limits the volatility of earnings through the cycle. We like CSTM...

European Commission ends probe on Chinese aluminum foil export

The European Commission (EC) has terminated its investigation into the possible circumvention of anti-dumping measures on imports of certain aluminum foil originating in China, the EC said Wednesday. Last October, the EC announced it had launched the investigation following a request lodged by EU producers Symetal, Eurofoil Luxembourg, Alcomet and Hydro Aluminium Rolled Products. The product concerned was aluminum foil of a thickness of not less than 0.008 mm and not more than 0.018 mm, not backed, not further worked than rolled, in rolls of a width not exceeding 650 mm and of a weight exceeding 10 kg. The EU producers' request "shows that a significant change in the pattern of trade involving exports from the People's Republic of China to the Union has taken place" following the...

LME impact on beer prices

It is reported that the London Metal Exchange (LME) is making impact on the beer market. Traders utilizing the LME to purchase aluminum for beer cans recently reiterated issues that the exchange is causing, putting beer prices in a pinch. While it may seem like a far-fetched relationship on paper, the LME’s practices are hurting beer prices according to producers. The biggest complaint against the exchange is that it has not done enough to ease supply bottlenecks that its warehouse system creates. The Beer Institute, which represents 93% of the beer sold in the US, wrote a letter to the LME late last year to express concerns that brewers were not receiving aluminum in a timely manner or at fair prices. That all translates to higher costs for consumers looking to enjoy their favorite beer....

Research says aluminum helps reduce 40% vehicle body mass

The results of an intensive research study were released last month at the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) World Congress. The study was commissioned by the Aluminum in Transportation Group of the U.S. Aluminum Association and completed by EDAG Group. Results of the study explain why car and truck manufacturers are relying more on aluminum and less on steel in the design and production of their vehicles. The study proved that vehicles manufactured from all aluminum components could shed over forty percent of the vehicles body mass. This creates an eighteen percent fuel reduction when combined with design changes and secondary mass savings. With increasing demand for fuelefficient vehicles, the study confirms the assertion that aluminum-concentrated vehicles will become more...
