A loose coalition of beer brewers, automakers, Boeing and Coca-Cola is accusing big banks, including Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan Chase, of anti-competitive behavior in the aluminum market, fueling regulatory concerns and prompting a Senate probe as part of an international political battle over Wall Street's expansion into the commodities business. The Senate Banking Committee next week will hear from MillerCoors and a pair of experts critical of banks' involvement in physical commodities activities and infrastructure assets involving businesses such as storage and transportation. The MillerCoors representative is expected to lash out at banks like Goldman and JPMorgan, which own large warehouses that store aluminum and trade derivatives contracts tied to commodity prices. South Africa’s sole beverage can manufacturer Bevcan is set to start phasing in the first of the long-awaited all-aluminium beverage cans. Bevcan spent the better part of the past year converting and expanding its production lines at its factory in Springs, Gauteng, to replace its tin-plated steel beverage cans with aluminium-bodied cans, in line with global trends. “Aluminium is already the preferred medium for beverage cans internationally. Globally, 85% of all beverage cans are made from this material,” Bevcan MD Erik Smuts said. Car makers turning to aluminum, at the expense of steel, to make lighter vehicles have steelmakers fighting back with major new investments to preserve market share in one of their most valuable markets. The metals-contest comes as auto makers look to build lighter cars, which tend to be more fuel efficient, in order to meet new fuel-economy regulations. Languishing aluminum prices also are encouraging the automotive industry to switch metals. For steelmakers, struggling with weak demand and over supply, a switch to aluminum poses a big threat because the automotive sector is the industry's second biggest customer—after construction—accounting for about 12% of total production, according to the World Steel Association. "It's all about weight saving, and the associated costs that go with...

A new self-adhesive tape that simplifies the process of pickling aluminum surfaces, has been found to be safer than existing treatment methods involving pickling pastes, sprays or baths, as it eliminates the rinsing stage and obviates the need for complicated wastewater disposal. Aluminum is a light metal used wherever low weight is a prime consideration. Traditionally used in aircraft construction, it is increasingly employed in other sectors such as automotive engineering. But as a base metal, aluminum requires protection against corrosion, which is usually achieved by a special paint or other surface coating. Adhesive bonding is becoming increasingly popular as a means of joining lightweight metal components. But aluminum cannot be coated or bonded without an appropriate pre-treatment...
