Microsoft is developing a Surface smartwatch in a material three times harder than glass

Tech giant Microsoft has been in the news a lot lately - for all the right reasons. Now the software major is back in the spotlight and this time it's for its much rumoured smartwatch. Microsoft's prototype wearable device is reportedly near completion and is being prepped as a new-age Surface gadget.

According to a write-up in The Verge, Microsoft's smartwatch is being developed by its Surface team, who has been handed over the project by the tech giant's Xbox accessories department. The device had been designed and prototyped by the latter till now. Since the smartwatch has now been taken under the Surface wing, it is going to be developed as a prototype Surface wearable device. This move is part of a bigger consolidation between the hardware divisions of Surface and Xbox within Microsoft.

The news about Microsoft's smartwatch going the Surface way is in tandem with earlier reports of the tech giant's prototype testing of devices with a Surface connector. Microsoft was earlier reported to have been scouting among manufacturers for those who could supply it with 1.5-inch displays for the watch as well.

Not much is known about the Surface smartwatch but it is believed to be powered by a modified version of Windows 8 and come equipped with 6 GB of storage, LTE connectivity and support for cloud storage along with compatibility with other Windows devices. It offers support for notifications and music controls too. It reportedly ships with colourful, changeable wrist bands ranging from red, blue and yellow to white, black and grey. Microsoft's latest creation is apparently one tough cookie as well, being made as it is with Oxynitride Aluminum, a translucent aluminum that is three times harder than glass.

Microsoft's Surface smartwatch plans are good news for loyalists of the brand and those who swear by the tech giant's way of doing things. If Microsoft plays its cards right, it might just have a winner on its hands - a one-stop wearable shop for everything from time keeping to communication, media and entertainment.
