THE first two of 35 six-car Siemens Inspiro metro trains entered passenger service in Warsaw on 6th October. The first train was dispatched by the mayor of Warsaw, Ms Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz (pictured), together with the CEO of Warsaw Metro, Mr Jerzy Lejk, and the CEO of Siemens Rail Systems Mr Jochen Eickholt. Inspiro is a new generation of metro train designed for Siemens by BMW's US subsidiary Designworks. The trains feature four sets of doors on each side, full-width inter-car gangways, and are free of interior equipment cabinets. Each train can accommodate up to 1500 passengers with seats for 244. To reduce train weight, the car body is made of aluminium and a new type of cork-aluminium floor weighing 30% less than a conventional floor is used which also helps to dampen noise and...

London studio International have released an exciting new range of aluminium lamp shades, from designers Marc Bell and Robin Grasby, who won third prize at the [D3] Contest for young designers with the product in 2012, reports Zeen. The design is named Apollo, and the products are made from modular spun aluminium shades with laser cut slits. Different combinations mean that light can be filtered depending on your requirement or desire. The Apollo comes with a standard screw cap holder that can be layered with either perforated or solid shades to direct and filter light. This allows you more control over the level and nature of light in a given room. The range was launched properly at designjunction during last month’s London Design Festival – displayed in an installation of over 200...

Project 7 from Jaguar, which made its debut at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed and promises, says Jaguar, to reflect the heart of the company’s sports car DNA. Supposedly inspired by a simple sketch, a small team of Jaguar designers have tuned and customised the company's new F-Type sports car into a homage to the Jaguar E-Type sports car of the 1950s. Although it is not intended for production, Project 7 is not merely a static concept, but a fully-functional, high-performance sports car in its own right ready to drive on the streets of Britain. The cars rigid aluminium architecture helps contain the 550PS version of Jaguar’s 5.0 Litre V8 Supercharged engine – an increase of 55PS over the standard, if you can call it that, F-Type V8 S. Power is delivered through Jaguar’s 8-speed...

In an effort to deter thieves who have been cutting electricity lines in order to steal the copper cable and sell it, the electricity company GECOL says it plans to replace copper with a cheaper aluminium alternative in the hope of ending the thefts. Aluminium is highly conductive and is used in much household wiring, although it is not a conductive as copper. Tripoli has again been beset by long electricity blackouts. The thefts are said by GECOL to be one of the reasons for the blackouts. Just this week cables at the substation at Tajoura were taken, forcing it to shut down. Disruption of the gas supply has also played a part; south Tripoli power station is gas powered. The situation has been further complicated by the fact that GECOL engineers have been reluctant to go to head out and...

A member of the Deviant Art team has come up with a new concept for the upcoming Nexus 5. We think that it looks like a aluminum slab, but there is some glass and plastic mixed in it too. It is the specifications which are interesting though as we could expect them to show up at some point in the future. The design of the Nexus 5 is mainly glass and black colouring. The IPS display has the resolution f 2160 x 384. The handset runs on the Snapdragon 800, it comes with 4GB of RAM, it is available in either 16GB or 32GB, has a 13MP camera and the handset is protected with Gorilla Glass. The device has a battery of 3000mAh, but then this is not too far off from the battery of the Samsung Galaxy S4. Personally we prefer a handset that is more rectangular in shape, due to the fact that it feels...

Based on talks about chassis orders for the second half of 2014, demand for aluminum unibody chassis processed using CNC tools will continue until then for use in mid-range and high-end slim consumer electronics, according to Taiwan-based chassis makers. The sources pointed out that most makers are currently landing orders for the second half of 2014, and based on client product roadmaps, metal chassis will remain a mainstream specification in the future. Aluminum is currently still the best material for creating unibody chassis, the sources noted. Although many makers have developed carbon fiber-reinforced plastic chassis to substitute aluminum ones, they are still unlikely to do so in the short term due to their difference in rigidness.

KM Packaging has worked alongside tray manufacturer, i2r Packaging Solutions, to create an aluminium tray with transparent lid for a UK supermarket ready meal. The company, which celebrates its 30th anniversary next year, faced technical challenges of anti-fog and potential risk of product contamination to create 50 trays with two different lids for hot and cold peel. Alan Lockhart, business development manager, KM Packaging, said the product’s cream laquered surface was demanding because it has different qualities to aluminium and the film lid had to conform to criteria including hot and cold peel, be oven efficient, anti-fog, and safeguard contamination of pre-cooked food. Speaking to FoodProductionDaily about the popularity of ready meals, Lockhart said: “The ready meal market is...

According to a recent report by AutoBild, Audi is planning to launch a Q1 crossover by 2016. The Q1 will be based on the Volkswagen Polo. Built on the Volkswagen Polo platform, this baby crossover would reportedly measure 3.8 meters in length. Despite being a crossover with a raised seating position and generous ground clearance for its size, the Q1 will not be available with Quattro All wheel drive system. The new Audi Q1 may have plenty of aluminium. The use of aluminium and other composite materials can considerably cut the vehicle weight, and increase the performance and the fuel efficiency. But, use of aluminium increases the overall cost of production of the vehicle, which is then passed on to the customer. Aud is already testing the S1 quite aggressively, which is expected to be...

Before going on to international fame as the architect of the New York World Trade Center towers, Minoru Yamasaki designed a gem of a modernist structure in 1959 in Southfield to serve as a regional office for the Reynolds Aluminum Company. Located on the corner of Northland Drive and Northwestern Highway, this three-story building with an open design and central atrium, was hailed as an “ode to aluminum.” Atop the atrium, a skylight made of a series of pyramids floods the structure’s central core, while the glass walls of the upper floors are sheathed in light deflecting aluminum grills. Years later the Reynolds Building was converted to a health club and is currently for sale by LA Fitness. The building will be open for the Southfield Mid-Century Modern tour. Also open on the tour,...
