Russian aluminum giant Rusal has signed a memorandum of intent with the State Corporation Bank for Development and Foreign Economic Affairs, or Vnesheconombank, to jointly set up facilities to produce aluminum and aluminum alloy-based automotive components, rolled and cable products, the company said Monday. The finished goods would be supplied to the Russian market. Russian and foreign automakers, who have specific commitments to increase their share of Russian-made parts used by their facilities, will be among the potential consumers of such auto components, Rusal said in a statement. Under the agreement, Rusal will attract investors, provide them with the existing industrial infrastructure and ensure that aluminum is supplied to production sites. Vnesheconombank, in turn, will consider...

Alcoa Inc. will benefit from “a once in a lifetime shift” by the auto industry toward using more aluminum in its best-selling vehicles, CEO Klaus Kleinfeld said on Monday. “The big change is, aluminum has a leg up” on steel, Kleinfeld said in Alcoa's Corporate Center on the North Shore during the company's 125th anniversary celebration. Though aluminum always had an advantage because of its lighter weight, “automotive firms were not ready to switch over for full-scale production, particularly with their volume cars,” he said. They are now, as they gear up to meet the government's 54.5 mpg target by 2025 with lighter-weight materials. Alcoa, the nation's largest aluminum company, is building three plants to produce body sheet for the auto industry — in Davenport, Iowa, which will go online...

Trimet Aluminium SE has concluded the financial year 2012/2013 with sales of 1.2 billion euros (previous year: 1.3 billion). With an annual result of 1.7 million euros, the medium-size company returned to the profit zone. Despite the slight decline in sales the material specialist experienced a sustained good order situation, especially in the automotive sector. Production at Trimet with 1924 employees at all its locations was close to the 500,000 tonne capacity limit. In the course of the current financial year the family-owned company is further expanding its automotive division, and with the takeover of two plants in France, it intends to open up new business areas. The slight decline in sales compared to the previous year can be explained by the recent low international aluminium...

In four-and-a-half months Somerville Aluminum turned a gutted 15,000-square-foot warehouse on County Line Road into it's new location, seven miles away from the borough where it was founded in 1950. It opened in June, but on Sept. 26 held a reception to celebrate the move to Branchburg. Longtime customers, vendors, family members and officials attended the reception, including the state's Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno. She praised Somerville Aluminum for its longevity, asked questions about products during a tour of the new facility and addressed the crowd before helping to cut a ceremonial ribbon. Guadagno talked about the importance of small businesses in New Jersey — generating 96% of the jobs — and the ability of Somerville Aluminum to employ more than 30 people, and increase its workforce...

Kobe Steel, Ltd. announces that it will establish a company in the Xiqing Economic-Technological Development Area in Tianjin, China to produce aluminum sheet for automotive body panels. This decision was made at the board of directors meeting held earlier today. The new company will be the first Japanese operation to produce aluminum sheet for body panels in China. Kobe Steel will supply master coils from its Moka Plant in Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. The aluminum will then undergo annealing followed by surface treatment and other finishing processes by the new company. Kobelco Automotive Aluminum Rolled Products (China) Co., Ltd., the new company, will be established in early 2014. It will have a production capacity of 100,000 metric tons per year. The wholly owned subsidiary of Kobe Steel...

The future of aluminium use for signage, display, presentation, packaging, storage and promotional gift purposes looks bright, owing to the versatility, recyclability and ecofriendliness of the metal, reports South African aluminium fabrication and finishing specialist Metal Graphics. However, Metal Graphics director Clare Griffin says, although the current uncertainty in the South African mining sector has not affected the aluminium price, the industry is, nonetheless, extremely volatile owing to the global economic uncertainties and, therefore, an increase in price is expected in the next few months. To mitigate the possible negative impact of a high aluminium price, Metal Graphics buys in bulk to gain a better price advantage over its competitors. But, she adds, while all manufacturing...

The use of aluminium in the housing and commercial segments of the South African market is growing, reports South African window manufacturer Duro national contracts manager Barry Sacks. More consumers are increasingly realising the benefits and long-term savings offered by aluminium products. Sacks explains that aluminium is easier to handle and provides virtually unlimited potential for innovative design features, which are not always achievable with wood and steel, explains Sacks. Moreover, owing to its aesthetic appeal, it is highly sought after by all sectors of the building industry. The clincher, however, is that aluminium is consistently anodised or powder coated, which enables it to withstand the impact of external elements such as heat, wind, rain and salt spray, making it ideal...

Perodua plans to introduce an aluminium engine in its next model to be launched in the third quarter of next year. President and Chief Executive Officer Datuk Aminar Rashid Salleh said the engine would be produced at the RM1.3 billion plant expected to be completed in the third quarter of next year. "We are going to change our engine from cast iron to aluminium to further improve the internal combustion engine," he told reporters after presenting prizes to winners of the "Revive Your Drive Contest" here on Thursday. Aminar Rashid said apart from giving better fuel consumption, the transition to aluminium engine would also help reduce manufacturing cost, in line with the company's target to reduce cost between 20 and 30 per cent by 2015. "For us to be competitive, we target to cut down...

U.S. carmakers’ consumption of aluminum may surpass European counterparts in the next 12 months as new models using the metal come to market, according to Novelis Inc. Ford Motor Co. is among manufacturers rolling out new cars that substitute aluminum for heavier steel. Use of the lightweight metal in vehicles is rising about 5 percent a year, according to Barclays Plc. Making car bodies consumes about 350,000 metric tons of aluminum sheet a year, of which Atlanta-based Novelis produces 250,000 tons, according to Erwin Mayr, president of Novelis Europe. U.S. vehicles are incorporating more aluminum because of Corporate Average Fuel Economy standards that limit fuel usage and consumer demand for cars that are more economic and cause less pollution, Mayr said in an interview. European...

The aluminium strategy of the Kingdom of Bahrain is focused on its downstream sector, with the country having already signed three agreements for investments based on its smelter expansion project, an executive at the state’s investment arm said. The investments will come in the form of processing the additional metal produced at the expansion of the Aluminium Smelting Co of Bahrain (Alba), a $2.5 billion project which, upon completion, will expand the plant’s production capacity by about 45%, or 400,000 tonnes of liquid aluminium. “At Mumtalakat, we are currently in discussions with a number of potential partners, and in fact have already signed three Memoranda of Understanding with leading global aluminium downstream companies to establish operations in Bahrain and capture the value...

China’s planned construction of ultra-high-voltage (UHV) power grid will keep demand robust for aluminium wire and cable before 2017, Shanghai Metals Market foresees. China is already building, or has approved, more than half of a $100 billion network of high-voltage power lines to connect remote energy producing regions to the east coast, Reuters reported in August, citing a top official at the State Grid Corporation of China (SGCC). The state grid will spend 620 billion yuan ($100 billion) by 2017 on 20 UHV lines spanning nearly 20,000 kilometers, Zhang Zhengling, deputy director of development and planning at the firm, told Reuters in an interview. A majority of high voltage transmission lines use aluminium wire and cable, whereas little copper is consumed in such power lines,...
