Downstream aluminium weekly recap: Gränges plans SEK 600 million investment expanding its battery cathode foil production capacity; General Motor allots US$55 million for Defiance plant in Ohio
To suffice Europe’s growing demand for battery components, Gränges has planned a SEK 600 million investment over two years to double its battery cathode foil production capacity in Finspång, Sweden, which will be active by 2025. General Motors (G.M) allotted US$55 million from the major US$918 million investment for its Defiance plant in Ohio, which houses an aluminium foundry and a machining centre. A critical fume extraction procedure was executed at a respectable aluminium foundry in Gujrat by experts from industrial air and liquid filtration firm Losma India. The National Aluminium Company Limited increased its aluminium products and aluminium ingot prices for the third time in a row, effective from January 26.
It has been currently declared by General Motors (G.M.) that the company is making a US$918 million investment for its production units located in the U.S.A. From the total investment, almost US$55 million will be allotted for the G.M. Defiance plant in Ohio, which houses an aluminium foundry and a machining centre.

Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) has acknowledged ASAŞ Alüminyum San. Ve Tic. A.Ş. (ASAŞ Alüminyum) with the Performance Standard certification for the manufacture of aluminium flat rolled products, aluminium profile, composite panels, PVC profiles, and shutter products at its Akyazı and Karapürçek production facilities in Türkiye, and headquarters located in Istanbul, Türkiye.
Gränges plans to invest SEK 600 million over two years to double its battery cathode foil production capacity in Finspång, Sweden, to meet Europe's growing demand for battery components. The new capacity is expected to be operational in 2025.
According to the US Census Bureau data, the United States exported 24,000 tonnes of aluminium plates, sheets and bars to Mexico in October 2022, which reflected a month-on-month surge of 9,000 tonnes or 37.50 per cent. In September, the US exported 15,000 tonnes of aluminium flat-rolled products to Mexico, down by 7.98 per cent from 16,300 tonnes in August.
Vedanta Limited has added INR 2,000 per tonne to its aluminium products and aluminium ingot prices on Wednesday, January 25. That brought the company’s aluminium wire rod price to INR 251,000-258,500 per tonne versus INR 249,000-256,500 on January 21. Vedanta increased its aluminium wire rod price by INR 3,500 per tonne on January 21 to sell the product at INR 249,000-256,500 per tonne.

Hindalco Industries Limited increased its aluminium products prices by INR 2,000 per tonne, with effect from January 25. That brought the company’s aluminium wire rod price to INR 253,600 per tonne versus INR 251,600 per tonne on January 21.

A week later, since the last hike, National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) has further increased its aluminium products and aluminium ingot prices, with effect from Thursday, January 26. This marks the third consecutive escalation in NALCO’s aluminium prices.
