Downstream aluminium weekly: Alucast UK introduces servitization in Black Country aluminium facility; MetLase develops 12% lighter aluminium aerospace components with AMRC

EDITED BY : 5MINS READ

The European Aluminium Foil Association said that while exports continued to fall at -15%, European aluminium foil deliveries for containers and technical applications stabilised in H1 2022. (EAFA). According to EAFA statistics, the continent's overall demand for aluminium foil increased in the first half of 2022 by 0.7% to 494,000 tonnes from 490,300 tonnes in H1 2021. In the West Midlands, the industrial hub of the UK, one of the top aluminium facilities, Alucast, stepped in to reap the benefits of "servitisation," a practice wherein a business can directly include consumers in its revenue collection by providing them with some fee-based service. MetLase, an engineering company in Yorkshire, collaborated with the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (AMRC) to significantly reduce the weight of crucial aircraft components, revolutionising the manufacturing process. These parts would need to be made out of 7000-grade aluminium, which warps during machining and has a high internal residual stress.

One of the UK's leading aluminium facilities, Alucast, located in the West Midlands, the country's industrial core, stepped in to harvest the fruits of 'servitization', a process by which a company can directly involve customers in its revenue collection by offering them some chargeable service. The company foretells this might increase their earnings by 10 per cent resulting in an additional £800,000 turnover by customers accessing one-off services.

On Thursday, September 9, China's aluminium billet inventories plunged by 2,100 tonnes W-o-W across four major consumption areas. All other regions showed a reduction in their inventories, except Foshan, which had a build-up. Due to rising aluminium prices, downstream purchasers stocked at reduced prices, which aided in the destocking process and Yunnan's power difficulties and the impending holiday.
