Delhi Government eyeing an EV ramp-up with 7000 charging stations in '26

EDITED BY : 2MINS READ

EV Charging Stations

The Delhi Government has made an announcement to install 7,000 charging points for electric vehicles (EVs) in 2026. This push will be carried out in phases across 2026, with Q1 expecting an addition of 1,000 chargers, followed by progressive upscaling in the next quarters.

Moreover, aiming to promote EVs and reinforce its infrastructure to reduce air pollution, the Government will be adding 100 battery swapping stations this year. The step is marked as a precursor of the Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy 2.0. The revised policy, along with the Centre’s PM e-drive scheme, will offer incentives to accelerate EV adoption in Delhi.

A recent study by the Council on Energy, Environment and Water depicted that in the sector of EV adoption in 2024-25, Delhi ranked third among states and union territories, with registrations exceeding 83,000 EVs during the year.

According to official figures, at present, there are 8849 charging stations in Delhi, way below the required number of approximately 36,150. To make up for the shortfall of 27,000 points, quarterly targets have been set to install 1,000 charging points in January-March (Q1), 1,500 in April-June (Q2), 2,300 in July-September (Q3), and 2,200 in the final October-December phase (Q4). With these additions, the final number of charging points in Delhi is expected to exceed 16,000 by the year's end.

The rollout has public transport locations as its central focus. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has planned an expansion of the charging network from 140 to 215 charging points. Meanwhile, the Regional Rapid Transit System is to plant 12 charging points at the Ashok Vihar and Anand Vihar stations.

Battery swapping capacity will also be scaled up. As of December 31, 2025, Delhi had 893 swapping stations, against a requirement of approximately 1,500. By December 2026, the Centre aims to include 1,268 additional stations.
