Council campaigns for screw top recycling in Bedford
This is designed to increase the recycling of aluminium screw tops and collars.
The council hopes that this campaign will encourage people to link the bottle to the screw top before placing them in recycling banks.
The campaign stresses the importance of recycling aluminium closures as they are 100 per cent recyclable and so each screw top and bottle placed in a bottle bank can be turned into something new and useful such as other bottles, phones and even cars.
Mayor of Bedford Borough, Dave Hodgson, said: “We are committed to reducing the amount of waste needlessly sent to landfill and this includes encouraging local residents to recycle as much as possible.
“Although screw tops are very small their recycling potential is enormous. The vast majority of screw tops are made from aluminium which means they can be recycled over and over again
“Local residents can recycle even more by screwing the top back onto the empty bottle and dropping it in their local bottle bank.”
This recycling campaign is also intended to make local recycling more efficient and easy.
Rick Hindley, Executive Director of the Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation (Alupro) said: “The market for aluminium bottle closures is growing rapidly, particularly for wine bottles, so it is important that we get in the habit of recycling them so that the aluminium can be re-melted and re-used. Simply screwing the top back on the empty bottle before recycling is the simplest and easiest way for people to do their bit in recovering this valuable, sustainable and recyclable material.”
