China Customs data reveals that increased bauxite exports by Guinea to China after the rainy season has rebounded China’s bauxite imports in August. As per the data, China imported 7.89 million tonnes of bauxite in August, 8.4 per cent up from 7.28 million tonnes in July. China Customs data found that higher demand from Yunnan provinces has also accounted for the rebound.

In contrast to August 2018, China’s bauxite import in the same period last year was at 6.24 million tonnes, which means the import volume increased 20.9 per cent year-on-year last month. This brought the total bauxite import volume to 57.47 million tonnes in China during the first eight months of 2018, up 28.5 per cent from 41.1 million tonnes in the contemporary period of the previous year.
China’s bauxite import from Guinea in August 2018 was at 3.45 million tonnes, 16.5 per cent up from its previous month’s 2.96 million tonnes. Import from Australia also rose 20.7 per cent month-on-month to 3.15 million tonnes. Hence, the two countries in total accounted for a larger share of 83.5 per cent in total imports for August, Shanghai Metals Market learned.
In addition, China also imported from Malaysia, which came in at 196,000 tonnes in August, as the Malaysian government eased its ban on bauxite export. Greater demand in Yunnan bolstered imports from Jamaica as well to 91,000 tonnes last month.
More traders have participated in bauxite import trade, SMM learned. Forward cargoes procured by State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC) arrived at Chinese ports in August, totalling 243,000 tonnes.
