China bauxite imports tumble 59.17% YoY in March on falling supply and weak demand

The sharp drop in imports was due mainly to no shipments to China from Indonesia after its ban on ore exports, according to SMM's research team. The preference to use inventories for production and production cuts at Chinese alumina producers with imported ore as raw material, were also blamed for the tumble in imports.
Bauxite imports from major suppliers are detailed as follows.
Country Quantity (tonnes) Year-on-Year Change
Indonesia 477,400 -85.56%
India 48,500 -87.68%
Australia 768,800 -1.71%
