Brazilian aluminium scrap prices increase sharply
The most expensive class of secondary aluminium items in Brazil – scrap profile cuttings, unpainted and without contaminants (iron, oil, grease and rivets) – ended the second week of September at 4,750 Reais ($2,163) per tonne, up 6.5% month-on-month and 16.1% higher year-on-year, according to Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV), which carried out the survey for Abal.
“We hope prices do not increase anymore, as it is a very disruptive situation for the market,” a scrap dealer told Metal Bulletin.
“The [movement in the] dollar and the LME price, which saw a slight drop recently, would push prices down, except that the shortage of scrap in the market is still intense, which drives prices up,” the dealer added.
“I believe that prices will reach a more stable level soon. Less scrap is being offered because sellers expect LME prices will move [so they are waiting],” a second scrap dealer told Metal Bulletin.
The average price in Brazil for scrap profile cuttings with a maximum of 2% of contaminants ended the second week of September at 4,190 Reais, 8% up on August and 14.2% up year-on-year.
The average price of Scrap household foil and aluminium domestic items without other materials, such as wood or iron, was 4,140 Reais per tonne, up 4.8% month-on-month, and 9.8% higher year-on-year.
Used beverage can (UBC) briquette ended the second week of September at 3,450 Reais per tonne, up 5.8% on August and 13.1% higher year-on-year.
Loose or baled UBC was 3,280 Reais per tonne, up 5.5% on the second week of August and 16.3% higher year-on-year.
The average price of compacted scrap without contaminants with a maximum of 2% of oils and lubricants was 3,160 Reais per tonne in the second week of September, up 6.4% month-on-month, and up 12.9% year-on-year.
The average price of aluminium sheets and foil cuttings, painted or unpainted, with a maximum of 3% of impurities, was 3,680 Reais per tonne, up 8.6% month-on-month and 7.6% higher year-on-year.
