
Brazilian bauxite export volume rose in June following 1.6 per cent year-on-year drop in the fourth quarter of the last financial year ending 31st March 2017. As per foreign trade ministry of Brazil, MDIC data, bauxite export in June totalled 906,881 tonnes, up 9.3 per cent from the same period previous year. In June 2016, Brazil exported 829,837 tonnes of bauxite.

{alcircleadd}Going by the estimates, if the rising export trend continues, Brazil’s total bauxite export volume for the entire year of 2017 will reach 11.3 million tonnes (11315123.45 tonnes), up 17.7 per cent from 2016. Last year, bauxite exports from the country totalled 9.6 million tonnes (estimated).

Value-wise, bauxite export by Brazil is poised to witness a drop in 2017. The country exported bauxite worth US$466 million in 2016, which is estimated to decrease to US$447 million in 2017. This is even lower the than bauxite export value of 2015, when it was estimated at US$452 million.

Estimated bauxite export by Brazil in Q1 FY2017-18, ending June 2017, was 2,722,331 tonnes. In Q2 FY 2017-18, it will rise marginally higher up to 2,776,952 tonnes.
China has been the undisputed largest importer of Brazilian bauxite in 2017 till now. Other countries which have been procuring significant quantities of the aluminium ore from Brazil are Argentina, Bolivia, Canada, USA, and Uruguay.

As per the U.S. Geological Survey statistics, Brazil ranks third in terms of bauxite reserve volume after Guinea and Australia. It boasts 2.6 billion tonnes of bauxite. In 2016, it produced 34.5 million tonnes of the aluminium ore, up from 33.9 million tonnes in 2015.
