Parameters under the standard include thickness, size, handle strength, load-bearing capacity and resistance to temperature variations. Aluminium utensils must also contain a minimum of 99.5 per cent aluminium.
The requirement extends to imported aluminium used in food-related products. Large and medium-scale manufacturers must comply by October 1, while small-scale units have until January 1, 2027. Microenterprises are required to meet the norms by April 1, 2027.
BIS is also promoting the BIS CARE mobile application to help consumers verify the authenticity of ISI-certified products. The initiative is intended to curb contamination from harmful metals such as lead, cadmium and arsenic.
In Tamil Nadu, 18 aluminium manufacturers have secured BIS licences, including nine in Coimbatore and two in Madurai.
Consumers can identify certified products by the ISI mark, which carries the standard number above and a 10-digit CM/L number below.
