Russian aluminium producer Rusal has reached an agreement with Ghana's state-owned Ghana Integrated Aluminum Development Corporation (GIADEC) to jointly develop bauxite mining and alumina refining projects, marking a significant step towards expanding the country's domestic aluminium value chain. The Guyana Bauxite & General Workers’ Union (GB&GWU) says it has accepted an invitation from the Ministry of Labour to attend a meeting today at which the union expects to address matters of import. Semafo Inc. (SMF), a Canadian gold producer that mines in West Africa, plans to build a hydroelectric power plant in Guinea, said Mody Oury Barry, head of the project. A delegation from UC Rusal has visited Cameroon with the aim of securing its supply of bauxite. It will be up to the three Mataqalis in Bua on how they use the $700,000 given by the Chinese company, Aurum Exploration Limited for bauxite mining in the area. Member of the three Mataqalis board of trustee and Commissioner Northern Inia Seruiratu said they have met but nothing has been planned to be done with the money. Seruiratu said he just advised them on how the money could be used to generate more income now and in the future. More than $700,000 will soon be pumped into three Mataqali in Bua. This is with regards to the new Bauxite mine in Nawailevu in Bua which is set to get underway later this year. The three landowning units - Naicobo, Noro and Nalutu will then be paid $18,000 every year for the next 20 years. Legal Advisor for the three Mataqali Amani Bale said that this money is the first payment. The mining company Cape Alumina has finalised agreements with the Cape York Aboriginal land owners for the proposed Bauxite Hills mine and port project in Queensland, clearing the way for a large-scale exploration and drilling program to start later this year. Exploration consent and compensation agreements were signed between the company and the Apudthama Land Trust last week. Acting CEO Neville Conway said the agreements were a ‘major milestone’ in the project’s development and was further evidence of the positive relationship that existed between Cape Alumina and the Aboriginal people of western Cape York.
A Queensland farmer says he will lock his gates today if a mining exploration company tried to enter his land. Keith Jessen, from the South Burnett region in Southern Queensland told the ABC he had originally given permission for Queensland Bauxite to enter his property to take soil samples, because he didn’t know he had a choice.
