Global bauxite flows are expected to weaken in the fourth quarter of 2026 as China’s front-loading eases and Guinea’s export restrictions begin to constrain shipments. Despite a 2.8 per cent year-on-year rise in global flows in September, softer import requirements in India and the Arabian Gulf could limit demand, leaving China as the principal destination for seaborne bauxite but with little room for further growth.

September flows hint at diverging regional trends

Global bauxite flows reached 20.4 million tonnes in September 2026, up 2.8 per cent year-on-year, backed by higher shipments from Guinea. Month-on-month flows declined, in line with seasonal wet-weather conditions that typically restrict port movements. Guinea’s shipments to the market were more than 20 per cent higher than in September 2025.

China’s seaborne bauxite arrivals climbed to 19.7 million tonnes, an increase of 21.2 per cent year-on-year. However, the surge hints at front-loading rather than clear in of stronger underlying demand. Arrivals were flat year-on-year in Q3, suggesting limited growth in import requirements.

Elsewhere, bauxite arrivals in the UAE dropped 60 per cent in September as shipping disruptions in the Arabian Gulf continued to affect deliveries. Some regional processing facilities were operating below normal utilisation levels.

India, which absorbed some seaborne bauxite cargoes diverted from the Gulf, also recorded a slowdown. After imports ran ahead of the previous year in Q1 and Q2, arrivals declined by 13.8 per cent year-on-year in Q3. Adequate inventories and monsoon-based disruptions to domestic logistics contributed to the decline. September arrivals alone plunged 37 per cent year-on-year, i.e., the steepest monthly decrease recorded so far in 2026.

Guinea’s export quota clouds the Q4 outlook

Supply constraints are expected to become more pronounced towards year-end. Guinea introduced an annual bauxite export quota of 150 million tonnes in June, 18 per cent below 2025 levels. Yet its exports remained 21 per cent higher year to date, indicating that shipments will need to slow considerably in Q4 to remain within the limit.

Demand from other markets is unlikely to offset the reduction. India remains adequately supplied, limiting the need for additional imports, while regional tensions and continuing disruption are expected to constrain any recovery in Arabian Gulf demand. China’s demand is likely to remain comparatively resilient, although flat Q3 arrivals point to limited upside.

With Guinea accounting for the majority of China’s imported bauxite, lower loadings are likely to weigh on Chinese arrivals. Existing inventories and cargoes already in transit may cushion the initial impact, but the overall balance of risks points to an outlook shaped by softer global bauxite flows and reduced Capesize tonne-mile demand in Q4 2026.
