Alcoa has received recognition for its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance at Portland Aluminium in Victoria, Australia. Both the smelting and casthouse operations have been certified by the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) according to their Performance Standard, which is the most comprehensive in the aluminium industry.

This standard covers various principles and criteria for sustainability performance, including biodiversity, Indigenous engagement, circularity, and greenhouse gas emissions.

Portland Aluminium is a collaborated effort of Alcoa Australia (55%), CITIC (22.5%), and Marubeni Aluminium Australia (22.5%), and Alcoa looks after the everyday activities at the smelter.

ASI has also recertified Alcoa of Australia's assets in Western Australia, which includes two bauxite mines and three alumina refineries.

This means that all of Alcoa of Australia's operations are now certified to ASI's Performance Standard, which provides third-party validation of responsible production.

The Acting Vice President of Operations for Alcoa of Australia, Rob Bear, exclaimed: "Alcoa and its joint venture partners at Portland Aluminium are delighted to have achieved ASI Performance Standard Certification for our Portland smelting and casthouse operations."

Fiona Solomon, the Chief Executive Officer at ASI, commented: "We congratulate Alcoa on achieving ASI Performance Standard Certification at its Portland, Australia, smelting and casting operations. This certification not only acknowledges the efforts of Alcoa Portland but also recognizes Alcoa's ongoing commitment to add additional ASI-certified facilities throughout its global operations and demonstrate that sustainability is not just a goal but a core driver of success in the aluminium smelting industry."

Alcoa, a global industry leader in bauxite, alumina, and aluminium products, has proudly received ASI certification for 18 of its sites worldwide. The company has also obtained Chain of Custody certifications, allowing it to sell ASI-certified bauxite, alumina, and aluminium products worldwide.

Alcoa's values-based approach emphasizes integrity, operating excellence, care for people, and courageous leadership, with a vision to reinvent the aluminium industry for a sustainable future.

Sustainability

The company has a history of developing breakthrough innovations and best practices that have led to greater efficiency, safety, sustainability, and stronger communities wherever they operate after developing the process that made aluminium an affordable and vital part of modern life.
