Alvance British Aluminium is carrying out a maintenance and investment programme at its Lochaber Power Station. The hydroelectric power station provides the renewable electricity required for the production of low-carbon primary aluminium at the Lochaber Smelter in Scotland.
{alcircleadd}As part of the 2026 programme, all five generators at the power station are undergoing inspection and refurbishment. The work is being planned using a Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) process developed in partnership with engineering company Trillium to identify potential equipment risks and prioritise maintenance activities.
The company said the maintenance programme is aimed at ensuring a safe, efficient and reliable power supply while supporting future aluminium production at the site.

Electrical maintenance on Generator L1 is being carried out by Andritz, the original equipment manufacturer responsible for the design and construction of the generator.
The investment programme will also help maintain the power station's ability to provide balancing reserve services to the UK's national electricity grid. These services help stabilise the electricity network during fluctuations in demand while making efficient use of water stored in the hydroelectric system.

Alongside the maintenance work, Alvance British Aluminium is upgrading the station's electrical control systems. Under a three-year investment programme worth GBP 400,000 (USD 536,000), Andritz will install two additional Automatic Voltage Regulators (AVRs). The first AVR was commissioned in 2025, with the remaining two scheduled for installation over the coming years.
The company said the additional AVRs will improve generator output control and voltage regulation, helping the power station continue to meet National Grid Code requirements while supporting reliable renewable power generation for aluminium production.
