Following the announcement of $6 billion in funding to accelerate the decarbonisation projects in energy-intensive sectors, Charles Johnson, president and chief executive officer of the Aluminum Association, praised the Biden administration's pledge to assist in further decarbonisation of the aluminium industry.

"The Aluminum Association applauds the Biden administration's commitment to support additional decarbonisation of aluminum and other energy-intensive manufacturing sectors. The North American aluminum industry is already among the lowest emitting regions in the world. Aluminum and aluminum products made here have significantly lower impact than similar products made in China, the Middle East and elsewhere. And the next generation of low carbon smelting technology is being developed right here in North America. But there is much more work to be done. Critical federal investments like those announced today will help as the domestic aluminum industry innovates to become even more sustainable and competitive in the coming years," said Charles Johnson.
During the past 30 years, the carbon footprint of producing aluminium in North America has decreased by more than half. Also, the metal supports reduced carbon in industries, including packaging, construction, and automobiles. The smelting industry is still working on cutting-edge solutions like inert anodes and other solutions that eliminate all direct carbon emissions.
