Aleris to shut Roxboro coil-coating plant by May

US aluminum sheet maker Aleris plans to close its Roxboro, North Carolina, coil-coating plant by the end of May, spokesman Jason Saragian said Wednesday.

Aleris will continue to service its coil-coating customers from its other coil-coating facilities, specifically its Asheville, Ohio, and Lewisport, Kentucky, plants. He said the company recently finished installing a new wide-sheet coating facility at its Asheville plant, which made it ideal to absorb capacity from the Roxboro plant.

Overall coating capacity will not decrease because of this move, Saragian said, and will actually increase because of the addition to the Asheville plant.

The company will transition the current production over the next few months and will do everything possible to ensure a seamless transition with no disruption in service, Saragian said.

Saragian said the reason for the closure was due to the "company belief that we can streamline operations and service customers more efficiently by moving that production to other coating facilities -- those are the key drivers."

The 60 affected employees were told of the plant closure Wednesday, Saragian said.

Aleris's Roxboro coil-coating facility produces finished, painted sheet for the building and construction industry.
