On October 11, 2024, Alba (Aluminium Bahrain), the single-sited smelter, announced its two significant safety milestone achievements: the company's no on-site Lost Time Injury(LTI) inclusive safe-working hours touching 25 million and 8th consecutive summer without any heat-induced injuries and illness.
Alba's CEO, Ali Al Baqali, has praised the employees and contractor workers for their pivotal role in achieving these safety milestones. He emphasised, "Our 25 million safe-working hours without Lost Time Injury (LTI) and 8th consecutive safe summer are not merely numbers on a page; they represent a culture of safety that has been meticulously woven into the fabric of Alba. This is more than just a milestone; it's a testament to the unwavering commitment and dedication of our employees and contractor workers."
The achievements came with a dash of additional effort. The contractors and employees are provided with cooling cloths for body temperature regulation along with department-wise awareness campaigns. A newly introduced daily digital communication for the heat index was also helpful. Employees and contractor workers received the data on their mobile phones with guidance on proper water intake and recovery period between duties.
On this note, Baqali added, "Alba's Safety culture is a mindset that we have built over the years through a proactive approach and combination of factors such as open communication, strong shopfloor presence for the management, and commitment to safety-focused programmes and campaigns. As we celebrate these milestones, we recognise that it is not the peak of our success, and our Safety journey will continue."
Previously, the Company perpetrated a record-breaking 30 million safe working hours without a lost-time injury in 2022. The Company has been recognised internationally for its excellent Safety and Health track record.
This year, Alba has been awarded for safety accomplishments in four National Safety Council (NSC) USA awards, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) President's Award, and the prestigious British Safety Council (BSC)’s International Safety Award with Merit. The company is also recognised for its environmental practices, social contributions, and corporate governance.
Alba, the first aluminium smelter in the Middle East, is pivotal to Bahrain's flourishing downstream aluminium sector, contributing significantly to the regional GDP.
