Aluminium Bahrain (Alba) is taking swift measures to achieve carbon neutrality after unveiling its ESG Roadmap in April 2022. As part of this initiative, the company is expediting its efforts by introducing three solar charging stations. These stations will provide charging facilities for Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Solar-Electric powered industrial Personnel Carriers (PCs) used within the premises of the smelter. Alba aims to support sustainable transportation and reduce its carbon footprint by implementing these stations.
On June 22, 2023, Ali Al Baqali, Chief Executive Officer of Alba, was joined by Chief Power Officer Amin Sultan and other senior officials in a ceremony held to inaugurate these new stations, located at the car park areas of Power Stations 3, 4, and 5 Control and Service Buildings.
Installing three solar charging stations is expected to result in an annual savings of approximately 110,000 kilowatt-hours (KWhr) of energy. This significant reduction in energy consumption would also correspond to a decrease in carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 42 tonnes. Additionally, each charging station has a battery storage system, enabling charging during the evening hours. Moreover, any surplus energy generated can be efficiently fed back into Alba's power grid, maximizing the advantages derived from the clean and renewable energy produced.
In addition, Alba has acquired three state-of-the-art industrial PCs powered by solar energy, which will be deployed across various operational departments. By implementing these new PCs, Alba expects to conserve approximately 9.9 litres of fuel per PC per day, resulting in a substantial annual reduction of approximately 25 tonnes of CO2 emissions across all three PCs.
Commenting on this occasion, Alba’s CEO Ali Al Baqali stated, “The transition to carbon neutrality is not only a moral imperative but also a prime objective of Alba’s ESG Roadmap in line with the Kingdom’s Net Zero Emissions by 2060.”
“We are proud to lead the way in the Kingdom by being the first Company to use Solar-Electric powered industrial Personnel Carriers to promote sustainable development on all fronts.”
